To cry or scream? The patent injustice of the sentence meted out to Marvin Chavez shines like a spotlight of judicial intolerance and overzealous prosecution.
Chavez was convicted last November of selling marijuana to undercover agents and mailing the drug to a cancer patient. He was described by the prosecutor as "a sophisticated drug dealer" operating under the guise of the law. The law is Proposition 215, legalizing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. If Chavez was a sophisticated drug dealer, why did agents feel it necessary to pose as seriously ill patients? If they had merely made a "buy," it would have been proof of his guilt. But to appeal to one's compassion and then prosecute the person for this valuable characteristic is logic better found in "Alice in Wonderland." WILFRED COUZIN Laguna Niguel * Re "Cannabis Club Figure Gets 6 Years," Jan. 30: The comment attributed to me was taken out of context. I understand the need for the prosecutor's office and the role of the narcotics officer. However, what I can't understand is that with serious crimes rampant, the narcotics officers, at the direction of the prosecutor, found it necessary to set up entrapment to interfere with what I would call the operations of a law-abiding individual.
