A group that advocates the legalization of marijuana has a home-grown solution for patients who are legally allowed to use the drug but have problems getting it. Maine Vocals will show people who can provide documentation of a medical problem how to get seeds and how to cultivate the plants, said Donald Christen, the group's president.
Maine voters approved a law in November that allows marijuana use to treat medical conditions. But the law did not create a supply of the drug, so people have to buy it on the black market or grow it themselves. But growing the plants is surprisingly difficult, according to Al Mitchell, of Fayette. Mitchell, 34, who uses the drug to treat the side effects of AIDS medications, said he can grow award-winning roses but can't cultivate marijuana. ''They say marijuana is a weed, however, I can't seem to grow it effectively,'' he said. Christen said his group will provide tips about lights, fertilizer and other aspects of growing the plant. He said the group will also provide Web sites that point the way to seed sources. Christen said his group wants to start a buyer's club like those in California where patients can buy marijuana legally. He said growing the plants from seeds could take several months, too long for some patients. ''With a buyers' club, it would eliminate the stigma and put it into a more medical atmosphere,'' he said. I have deteriating disc disease in my neck and lower back. I have been prescribed 10-12 percs a day for the last 3years for pain. I tried marihauna for the first time in fifteen years and have been able to skip two doses a day of percs. I am interested in growing my own. Can you give me some tips on doing this.
