A 27-year-old Chipman man has been charged after Edmonton cops seized $2.2 million worth of marijuana from a farm east of the city. The bust, said police spokesman Wes Bellmore, is the city cops' biggest.
"This is the largest hydroponic bust that we've made in our history," he said. "The investigators did their homework and worked through it ... recovering about 40 garbage bags of marijuana from the farm." Police raided the home about 73 km east of Edmonton on Thursday. Drug detectives, with the help of RCMP from Two Hills and St. Paul, recovered 2,198 plants. Of those, 1,378 could be harvested in the next 10 days. There were also 820 seedlings, Bellmore said. In total, about 300 kg was seized. Detectives found electricity was being diverted into the building in a very "sophisticated manner" to power the grow operation, Bellmore added. "It was a very professional-looking job," he said. Cops tallied the number of crops the plants would have produced and multiplied that by an estimated street value to come up with the total worth of $2.2 million. Bellmore said detectives were still questioning people, including the homeowner, and further charges may be laid. The suspect's father was shocked at the charges. "I just found out. The family knew nothing about it," he said from St. Michael, 83 km northeast of Edmonton. His son grew up in St. Michael and has worked as a trucker. The accused, who lived on the farm alone, was "very upset," when he told his family about the bust, said his dad. His son declined to comment. "This is nobody's business but my own," he said. Two Hills Mounties say the latest bust near their town proves there's no hiding place for drug traffickers, said Sgt. Dan McNaughton. "A lot of people think in a rural area they are less likely to be noticed when actually it's the contrary," he said. "Sometimes rural residents also forget how interested other residents are in what they are doing." Larry James Fesyk is charged with production of a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and theft of telecommunications. He is to appear in court March 27. Published: Saturday, March 18, 2000Copyright © 2000, Canoe Limited Partnership.
