A candidate for alderman has been charged with two felonies for allegedly growing more than 500 marijuana plants in the basement of his south side novelty store and home. Michael O. Hageman, who faces 19 1/2 years in prison if convicted on both counts, says he has no plans to pull out of the aldermanic race.
Investigators raided his building after smelling " a strong odor of unburned marijuana, " prosecutors said Tuesday. On a second visit, Hageman told an agent about marijuana' s merits and said he would advocate legalization of narcotics and drug paraphernalia if elected to the Common Council, according to the criminal complaint. Hageman, who says he has not used illegal drugs for years, says he gives his plants to people who want to treat the pain of cancer, AIDS and other ailments. " If nothing else, the stuff I did downstairs shows I care about people, " Hageman said. " We need an alderman who cares." Hageman was free on bail Tuesday night. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance this afternoon. Hageman, 56, is running against alderwoman Suzanne Breier.
