For the second time in a week, narcotics investigators have broken up a marijuana factory in south Richmond County.Investigators raided the house at 2155 McElmurray Road at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and discovered more than 300 marijuana plants in the house and on the property.
Larry Edward Dukes, 42, and his common-law wife, Beverly Hinson Miles, 40, were arrested without incident at the house and charged with manufacturing marijuana. The arrests came after an anonymous tip and two weeks of detective work, Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Luther Gaskill said.Mr. Dukes and Ms. Miles told authorities the medium-level operation had been running since November but claimed none of it was sold for distribution, police said. ``According to them, this was their initial crop,'' Investigator Gaskill said. ``They said it was for their own personal use, but I can't see anyone using this much.''The plants were grown in a room in the house and a large greenhouse in the yard and were planted throughout the property, Investigator Gaskill said. When the buds ripened in the plants, the couple dried them out by placing them in an occupied room on cooking trays, spread-out newspapers and clothes hangers in a closet before being processed for use.Although the operation was not as complex and had fewer plants than the one discovered a week ago on Clark Drive, it was still significant, sheriff's Lt. Robert Partain said.Last week, four men were charged with manufacturing and trafficking marijuana after a police raid at 1302 Clark Drive turned up a complex marijuana manufacturing operation. Nearly 1,200 plants, which produced high-grade marijuana valued at $2,500 a pound, were seized in that bust. The low-grade marijuana seized Tuesday probably would fetch $1,000 a pound on the street, Lt. Partain said. With the two recent raids, narcotics investigators are learning more about pot farms, Lt. Partain said, adding there might be more raids.``Obviously, we've received intelligence on two operations and seen the kind of space they take,'' he said. ``We're going to see if it's a trend in two to three weeks (if more busts come). If it is a trend, then we have a problem.''Web Posted: March 14, 2000Reach Mark Mathis at (706) 823-3227©Copyright The Augusta ChronicleRelated Articles:Four Men Arrested in Marijuana Bust http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread5013.shtmlMan Arrested in Pot Bust Says He Grew for Himselfhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread2842.shtmlGrowers Take Pot Plants Indoorshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread1262.shtml CannabisNews Articles on Grow Lights & Growing Pot:http://www.google.com/search?q=cannabisnews+grow+lights http://www.google.com/search?q=cannabisnews+growing+pot
