A House of Delegates committee last night voted down an effort to legalize the use of marijuana as a medical treatment for cancer patients.Similar measures have been proposed before, though this bill--which was introduced by a Republican--was thought to have a better chance of passing in the House. But concern about how legalizing the drug for use by patients in the state might conflict with federal drug laws derailed the bill.
"I just can't get past the fact that it's against federal law," said Del. Ann Marie Doory (D-Baltimore).Still, a number of committee members expressed their hope that the bill would gain support over time, and they asked that the concept be proposed again next year. The bill was defeated on a Judiciary Committee vote of 11 to 7.Maryland:Saturday, March 11, 2000; Page B03 © Copyright 2000 The Washington Post CompanyRelated Articles:GOP Lawmaker Wants Medical Use of Marijuana http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread3799.shtml Md. What did you expect?

Hats off to kaptinemo.I think he should be promoted to Admiralnemo,or Colonelnemo. This is just typical behavior amongst people who were once honest, and rational, but then became members of this 'club',and part of the initiation, requires them to side with the 'powers that be'. The "going against Federal law" thing,is such a grand pile of crap,it makes me wanna barf! I like to look back,in disgust,,at the Clinton impeachment hearings. If you saw them, you will remember all these phonies saying over and over again,"we must act..etc..to uphold the Constitution...etc.... It's a cryin' shame that we no longer have a government 'by the people, and for the people'.dddd

The Proximity Theory

I just can't get past the fact that it's against federal law," said Del. Ann Marie Doory (D-Baltimore).This is exactly the same response I received from my own delegates in response to my request to support this Bill. And this is why. It goes like this: States (like the State on Maryland which just did this) that are physically closer to the Federal Capitol have so many Federal workers that they can always be counted on vote for anti-citizen, anti-State, pro-Federal measures like this one. Politicians in these States are so finely attuned to this that they forget that their first duties are to the *States*, themselves, and not to the population of Federal workers, who despite their clout, are a minority. This in turn fosters an almost unthinking defferal to Federal power, even when it is in the best interest of the States to tell the Federal government No! To say the relationship is incestuous is not speaking harshly enough. The further away a State is from DC, the better the chances for MMJ will be. It's us Maryland MMJ reformers' bad luck to live near the Anti Central.
