A Baldwin County couple has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor after their child took marijuana seeds from their home to school, according to the Sheriff's Department. But investigators don't believe Greg and Jenny Duncan intentionally gave the seeds to their child or four other Rosinton Elementary School students, or even knew they had them, said Sgt. Brad Burks of the Sheriff's Department's narcotics division.
Following a search of their home last week in the Steel Bridge community along River Road, the Duncans were also charged with second-degree possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, Burks said. They are free on total bonds of $3,500 each on the misdemeanor charges, he said. The couple's child was one of five sixth-grade students at Rosinton Elementary who were suspended for three days last Tuesday for possessing marijuana seeds, school officials said Wednesday. None of the students has been or will be charged with a crime, Burks said. "The case is closed pending the court dates," he said of the parents. Burks declined to say exactly how the children obtained the seeds, but said there is no evidence that the Duncans were growing marijuana, so the seeds probably were picked up by the child from the leaves they had at home. He added that there is no indication the couple was selling drugs. On Feb. 14, the parents of a Rosinton student discovered marijuana seeds in the child's possession at their home and the next day, took the child and the seeds to Principal Susie Nelson's office, school system officials said last week. That led to the discovery that other students also had marijuana seeds at school and they were all suspended for three days. Burks said that from what he knows about the school and community east of Loxley, this was an "isolated incident. "Based on talking to Mrs. Nelson, this is the first and last time this happened at school and it was handled as swiftly and justly as possible, in a very professional manner," he said. As for what the children planned to do with the seeds, Burks said he can only speculate. "I've heard different stories from different ones, but any time someone has marijuana seeds in their possession, it's my assumption that they intend to grow it."
