The Alsip Village Board on Monday rescinded a special-use permit for a landscaping business two weeks after its owner was arrested for allegedly growing marijuana in a semi-truck trailer at the business' location.Alsip Mayor Arnold Andrews said that the board four years ago had granted a special-use permit to Damian Nihlean of Orland Park to operate his landscaping business, Graveltron Inc., from the trailer, which is parked in a gated lot at 11511 S. LaCrosse St.
But the board voted unanimously to rescind the permit, and officials said the action will put Nihlean out of business in Alsip.Nihlean, 43, of 13287 80th Ave., Orland Park, was charged Feb. 7 with unlawful production of marijuana after police recovered 98 marijuana plants from the trailer, authorities said.Police became curious about the trailer when they noticed snow from a recent snowstorm had quickly melted off its roof and steam was rising.Nihlean and Jefferey Cobb, 43, of 27444 S. Kedzie Ave., Monee, were observed by police going into the trailer, which was receiving power from a nearby utility poles, authorities said. The two men then came out of the trailer and loaded two boxes into the back of a van, authorities said. More than 30 marijuana plants were contained in the van, authorities said.Police later discovered the rest of the crop inside the trailer, which was equipped with a state-of-the-art marijuana growing system.Nihlean told police that he ordered the marijuana seeds used to plant the marijuana from Holland through the Internet in December and that he was growing the pot to support is own habit, authorities said. Nihlean failed to return a phone call to his home Monday night.Cobb was charged with possession of marijuana, authorities said.Tuesday, February 22, 2000Daily Southtown, Inc.6901 W. 159th St.Tinley Park, IL 60477Newsroom (708) 633-6777Fax (708) 633-5999CannabisNews Archives on Cannabis Related Topics:http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml
