The Cannabis Reform Coalition (CRC) is holding a benefit event in Northampton tonight for the Amherst Buyers’ Club. The event entitled "Norman B Deviations from the Norm" is to be held at Fire and Water Café and broadcast live on WMUA radio at 7 p.m. tonight. Besides raising funds, event coordinator Norman Bie hopes to raise consciousness on several marijuana related issues.
In a statement, Bie said, "petitions to legalize marijuana both town-wide and statewide are now circulating." He continued, "Now is the time to register to vote. You can do so at this show or at the Town Hall." The issue of de-prioritizing marijuana has been the central focus of the CRC for some time now and the vote is coming soon. "Amherst votes on the question in April and Massachusetts votes on the question in November," Bie said. In preparation for the possible legalization of marijuana, residents have created The Amherst Buyers’ Club to assure that the group would be operational as soon as the law was changed, rendering marijuana legal. It should be noted that the Buyers’ Club is not currently in operation. Bie said this is due to the legal factors involved and an "allergy to being arrested." Concerts such as this one are held the first Tuesday of every month, but this week’s concert holds special importance to the group because of its proximity to the April vote. "Anyone who wants to vote in April has to get registered real quick," Bie said, "If you miss this meeting, the next one will be too late for the election."Tonight’s meeting will feature a musical performance by Bie. He performs an act, which he describes as, "a musical comedy for human rights." Along with his performance there will be special surprise guests as well as speeches by several other activists including Terry Franklin.Bie has been performing his act for approximately 12 years and along the way he has made ties with some high profile members of the activism community. "I have friends at High Times, Steve Hager, the editor is a good friend of mine, as well as the Cultivation Editor."He first started his show in 1987 and has been performing it ever since. He spent several years working in the "Campus Action Network" and has performed his act in San Francisco and at the University of California - Berkley traveling the country crusading for the legalization of marijuana.
