BOSTON, Two brothers and residents of Taunton, Massachusetts pled guilty today in federal court to marijuana and related money laundering charges.
United States Attorney Donald K. Stern announced today that Leonard Ryan Vargus, 25, and Thomas Vargus, 26, brothers originally from Taunton, pled guilty to conspiring to possess marijuana with intent to distribute and conspiracy to launder money. The pleas bring to four, the number convicted after a 28 month marijuana investigation that ended in September, 1997, with the indictment and arrest of 21 individuals, many from the Taunton, Massachusetts area. According to the prosecutor at the change of plea hearing, the Vargus brothers were involved in sending marijuana from California to Massachusetts and distributing marijuana in the Taunton area. Money generated from marijuana sales was sent to California by couriers and through Western Union transfers. Thomas and Leonard Vargus face up to twenty years' incarceration on each of the two counts, as well as monetary fines of up to $1 million. The investigation leading to the prosecutions was conducted by special agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Criminal Investigation Division of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police, the Taunton Police Department, and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael D. Ricciuti of Stern's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and Shelby Wright of Stern's Asset Forfeiture Unit.
