VATICAN CITY A disgruntled guardsman who killed a Swiss Guards commander and his wife last May was a marijuana smoker and a possible chronic drug user, the Vatican said today concluding its investigation of the deaths.
A 10-page Vatican report repeated initial findings that Cpl. Cedric Tornay killed the couple in a fit of anger over the commander's refusal to give him a medal. Tornay then shot himself in the couple's apartment inside the Vatican, the report said. For the first time, however, the Vatican reported finding traces of cannabis in the 23-year-old corporal's urine and suggested he may have been a ``chronic'' user of drugs, saying this would ``further explain'' his behavior. It also disclosed the autopsy found a cyst the size of a pigeon's egg in Tornay's brain. The slayings were the first at the Vatican in 150 years, raising questions about the reliability of the Vatican's security corps, who protect the pope. Some speculated that a broader conspiracy may have been behind the deaths. The Vatican report dismissed the possibility of other suspects and repeated allegations about Tornay's unstable mental state and his bitter relationship with the newly named Swiss Guards commander, Col. Alois Estermann. In a report from Switzerland, Il Messaggero on Sunday quoted Tornay's mother, Muguette Baudat, as claiming that all three who died were victims of a plot, and that her son was wrongly accused ``in the attempt to hide a probably unconfessable truth.'' The mother did not detail the ``unconfessable truth,'' saying her lawyers were waiting to see the official conclusions before counterattacking. The Vatican has not commented on the mother's claims.
