Source: Business Wire
On January 10, 2000, the Associated Press reported that the American Cancer society has funded a three-year grant in the amount of $361,000 for research into a "marijuana" patch. What they really meant to report on was a grant for research into a "THC patch." Tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, is one of more than 400 chemicals found in marijuana.
It is the THC that, according to research, contains medicinal value - not the other myriad of chemicals found in this weed and certainly not crude smoked marijuana.Just as nicotine is produced in a laboratory for the manufacture of nicotine patches rather than having patients smoke a tobacco cigarette, THC may be produced in a laboratory for the manufacture of THC patches. Crude smoked marijuana, with all of its toxins, will not be harnessed in patch form and dispensed as medicine. Incidentally, THC is currently being produced in laboratories and is legally dispensed in prescription pill form, which has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)."Referring to a THC patch as a `marijuana' patch is like calling a nicotine patch a `cigarette' patch or a `tobacco' patch," stated Dr. David A. Gross, the chair of the International Scientific and Medical Forum on Drug Abuse. "The media has, perhaps without conscious intent, helped foster the use of crude marijuana rather than the legitimate medicinal use of THC. It is important for the public and especially our young people to understand the difference in utilizing a pure drug compound as medicine versus a mixture of crude toxins," Dr. Gross added.Transdermal delivery systems are effective methods for delivering several types of medications. Smoking, any product is clearly hazardous to one's health and smoking crude marijuana is not an accepted medical intervention for any illness or condition. The International Scientific and Medical Forum on Drug Abuse is a division of Drug Free America Foundation, Inc. It is a brain trust of the world's leading researchers of substance abuse issues and physicians. Web Posted: 3:46 PM ET February 3, 2000 Katherine Ford or Calvina Fay at 727/893-2616 ST. Thanks kaptinemo
Those are very good questions. I like to make sure we all know how the other side tries to make their point. I am watching C-Span now on the Drug Media Blitz and it is very interesting. It is to be repeated later on this evening but check your local channel and schedule because the time might be different then mine. Peace, FoM!

No argument or criticism from me, FoM
Please don't get me wrong. My comment was not a criticism.I only wish to point out to those who may be reading this to start to look for the 'ties that bind' between these organizations. Some already know to look, and I apologize for preaching to the converted. But it is remotely possible that many of the people visiting this site for the first time may actually be new to the isssue - or the way we pursue it here. Many of us here, myself included, have bemoaned the obvious hypocrisies inherent in the WoSD. We know that if our point-of-view were heard, it would quickly dismember the DrugWarriors rationale and show their precious DrugWar for the failure it is. But to do that, you must first gather ammunition. Fortunately, for us, they have provided all that we need. Most of us here realize the depth of the hypocrisy endemic in this coalition of of drug producers (pharmaceutical corporations and breweries) and their supposed opponents (PFDFA, Drug Free America Foundation, and sundry other 'public service organizations.)Once you see these connections and know them for what they are, you can see the inherent weaknesses of their positions. And exploit them. For example, the simplest of all, and most glaring of paradoxes. For example, I'd like to ask that guy representing the PFDFA at that hearing 5 questions: 1) Is alcohol a drug? 2) If people use alcohol, are they drug users? 3) How much of your funding comes from breweries? 4) Don't they produce the drug, alcohol? 5) Isn't here an inherent hypocrisy in taking money from a drug producing corporation and then say you are against drug use?I know, these questions will never be asked so long as dunderheaded Senators and Congresspeople are elected to power. But if enough of us pester our representatives and demand answers, they will do one of two things. They will either shoot their mouths off (and their feet as well) by publicly blurting some bit of DrugWar mania that can be quickly and easily refuted by a calmer person in possession of the facts.Or they might, just might, as some of them privately have done, admit you are right. And when that happens, the landslide will begin. In either caes, you have to research your sources; in short, just look who'se talking.

My Thoughts
kaptinemo and everyone, I want you to know I post these way out in left field articles just to show how wrong they are. If they try to censor us then they will need to stop talking too. I wonder if they've given that any thought?

Always read the last part
The International Scientific and Medical Forum on Drug Abuse is a division of Drug Free America Foundation, Inc. It is a brain trust of the world's leading researchers of substance abuse issues and physicians. In other words, it is little more than a shill for the ONDCP and the major pharmaceutical companies, not to mention the breweries (producers of that wonderful braincell destroying, family trashing drug called alcohol; how can they say they are against drugs when they produce and market one?) who support the PFDFA.If the hypocrisy weren't so blatant I'd laugh.
