National Vigil Project - February 15 Vigils
Source: November Coalition
One of the first significant American events of the new millennum will take place on February 15, 2000. According to The Justice Policy Institute, the prison and jail population in this country will reach 2,000,000 for the first time in our history. More than half of those imprisoned are nonviolent offenders. The largest category of prisoners, by a wide margin, are drug law violators.
No other nation on earth, nor any nation in history has ever incarcerated so large a percentage of its citizens. Not only is the raw number growing, but the rate of increase is growing as well. Want to know where one of the vigils is going to be?Below is a list of vigil leaders and their contact information! If you don't see your city listed, please volunteer to lead one.2 MILLION IS TOO MANY!National Vigil Project - February 15 VigilsCalifornia - Los AngelesMidnight Special Book Store, 6:30 PM1318 3rd Street Promenade, Santa MonicaAminah Muhammad - 310-833-5754 - aminah november.orgSponsored by The November CoalitionCalifornia - Sacramento or ChicoSharon & Craig North - 530-534-5121 - snorth11 dcsi.netSponsored by Northern California FAMMCalifornia - San FranciscoPowell and Market Streets, 4:30 - 7:00 PMPatty Lynn Neilson - 510-528-7456 - patty november.orgMikki Norris - 510-215-8326 - mikki hr95.orgChris Conrad - 510-215-8326 - chris chrisconrad.comVirginia Resner - 415-753-6602 - virgie worldnet.att.netSponsored by The November Coalition, Human Rights and the Drug War, FAMMand the Family Council on Drug AwarenessConnecticut - New HavenFederal Courthouse downtown, 4:30 PMElaine Sabatino, 203-787-6100, elaine november.orgSponsored by The November CoalitionFlorida - GainesvilleStarke/Raiford Prison Complex near Gainesville on Route 16Kay Lee - 321-253-3673 - KLee vitel.tzo.comSponsored by The November Coalition and Florida Journey for JusticeIllinois - ChicagoJames R. Police State
Look at the records and be amazed. In 1900, 57,000. In 1970, 200,000. Track that without the WODs and you realize just how much injustice occurs here. We would have less than half a million prisoners. Think of all the horror and nightmare our government has caused with their drug jihad. One and one half million men, women and children behind bars just so that our political actors can smile and rattle their sabers. More the shame and pity that this will continue to be ignored because the media is owned by the guvmint. Welcome to the new Dark Age. "No matter how noble the objectives of a government, if it blurs decency and kindness, cheapens human life, and breeds ill will and suspicion--it is an evil government." Eric Hoffer
