Two Mexicali men were being held without bond Friday on charges they tried to smuggle Marijuana, Cocaine and Heroin across the U.S.-Mexico border. Carlos Edgar Silva del Cid, 19, was arrested by U.S. Customs inspectors after they found more than 12 pounds of heroin inside the tire of a vehicle he was driving. He had stopped at an inspection lane at the Calexico Port of Entry and a drug-detecting dog began sniffing at the right rear hubcab where seven packages of heroin were found. Hector Alfonso Benitez-Vega, 28, was arrested at the same port when U.S. Border Patrol agents found 35 packages of cocaine inside a specially built compartment of his pickup's gas tank. The drugs weighed 102 pounds, authorities said. ``We are excited when we seize marijuana and cocaine, but we are more excited when we seize amounts of heroin such as this,'' said Dan Floyd, U.S. Customs port director for Calexico. Benitez-Vega is set for a Feb. 11 preliminary hearing in San Diego; Silva, Feb. 18. Both men are being held in the Imperial County jail. Home Comment Email Register Recent Comments Help Comment #4 posted by george on March 13, 2001 at 06:55:13 PT: reply to comment three In reply to comment three,Personally i suspect that who ever made this comment has never had any envolvment with any kind of drug but has just re- gergitated what others have said and should have first hand experience before making such a comment, im a 17 year old student from england who regulary uses drugs such as hash, ecstacy, and cocaine and i am not an addict but use them for purely recreational purposes so to say that all drugs make you insane, secondly, there are also scientists that certain drugs i.e cannabis and ecstacy are bad for you but good. also i believe that the majority of scientists who say that drugs are bad have never tried them and can only give a bias view.
