Dear Readers, I am very pleased to report that -- starting next week -- you will see some major improvements in both the appearance and functionality of Marijuananews, made possible by an alliance with Rick Garcia’s Marijuana.com, which is a very impressive site. The sites will continue to run separately, but we will collaborate in such a way that each site enhances the utility and traffic of the other.
I was introduced to Rick recently when a reporter made a mistake in the name of Marijuananews, omitting the "news" part of the URL. I just wish that all media mistakes in reporting on marijuana had such a beneficial result!See:http://www.marijuananews.com/web_site_article_on_internet_cen.htmWeb Site Article On Internet Censorship Cites An Unimpeachable Source.– And An Unindictable One, Too, I Hope. Massive Cyber-Disobedience Is The Only Acceptable Response. In a conversation shortly thereafter, Rick volunteered to host Marijuananews and to give me badly needed technical support, so I can concentrate more on content and not have to deal with the other aspects of site management, which distract me from the subject at hand. And yes, it will finally have a search engine, which will be helpful to us all!For most of the last year Marijuananews has been very generously hosted by my good friends at Mapinc, but Mapinc is a non-profit organization and, as such, is not in a position to provide the kind of commercial support essential for getting advertising, which I need to provide food and other frivolities. Also, I think that I should not use the movement’s very finite resources when there are other alternatives available. I cannot begin to express by gratitude to everyone at Mapinc, especially Mark Greer and Matt Elrod, for their invaluable support, and I will remain a devoted booster of their vital efforts. As I have said before, I think that Mapinc is not just essential for the anti-prohibitionist movement, but will be studied for years to come as the most important and creative use of the Internet for social change yet developed. In addition, the alliance with Marijuana.com will free me up to begin the long delayed Marijuananews Internet Radio. It will be launched by the end of the month with daily webcasts. The volume of the news has grown so much that it is no longer possible for me to post and comment on all of the worthwhile stories. When Marijuananews Radio begins, I will still continue to post stories daily that can only be covered adequately in writing, but I think that audio will have a much broader appeal allowing us to report more news and to get the message out to more people. On a cold winter's night the family can gather around the warm glow of the computer screen and listen to Marijuananews Radio! There will be more about Marijuananews Radio very soon, including an introductory sample so that you can be prepared to tune in for the regular programs.Next week there could be minor glitches in the first few days, and the appearance of the new and improved Marijuananews may morph a little bit as we see how it looks and feels, but I will – as always – appreciate your comments and suggestions. Finally, I think that we will probably see other such alliances in the movement’s Internet presence, with Marijuana.com and with other hub sites. In a sense we do compete with one another for traffic and advertising dollars, but we really do benefit from competition. No one site will appeal to everyone. Frankly, we have such a minuscule percentage of the Internet traffic that we will all benefit from anything that makes the exploding number of new Net users aware of the anti-prohibitionist presence on the Web. There is plenty to go around. The people are starving for the truth. Most importantly, this competition and collaboration will hasten the end of marijuana prohibition and restore freedom to the people. That is what this is all about, or it is about nothing at all. Many thanks,Richard CowanPS -- If everything goes according to plan, Monday’s postings will be to the new host, but it may take a day or so for the new address to propagate through the Internet, so if you do not find Monday night’s update when you go to Marijuananews, then go to Marijuana.com and link over from there.January 14, 2000http://www.mapinc.org/http://www.marijuana.com/http://www.marijuananews.com/Note: I want to wish the new venture between Marijuana.com and Marijuananews the greatest success! We must stop the insanity! It's time to pay attention to all of our voices and they are! I'm proud to be involved with such a fine group of people.
