Morgan Grams, son of Sen. Rod Grams, R-Minn., was appointed a public defender Wednesday during his arraignment on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. Morgan Grams, 21, did not enter a plea, which is considered the same as pleading innocent. A pretrial hearing was set for Feb. 18.
Grams was stopped in July in a borrowed rental vehicle after his father called the Anoka County sheriff for help finding his son. A deputy found 10 bags of marijuana and beer cans in the Isuzu Rodeo. The senator has acknowledged that his son has had drug problems and has been jailed twice for drug-related offenses. Morgan Grams is scheduled to appear Jan. 19 on a felony charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle. He is accused of stealing a woman's car after taking her to a Coon Rapids nightclub, then using her credit card and trying to cash checks on her account.
