A group that helped pass a state law allowing medical use of marijuana is sending out a publication to explain how the law works. The law apparently was causing confusion before it went into effect on Dec. 22. Elizabeth Beane, spokeswoman for Mainers for Medical Rights, said the group began receiving questions over the telephone before that date, and put together a 15-page brochure as a result.
''The hope is that patients and doctors will see that they can comply with the law,'' she said. The law, approved by voters in the Nov. 2 election, lets patients use marijuana if they are diagnosed with conditions such as glaucoma, seizures, muscle spams from diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and nausea from AIDS or chemotheraphy. The marijuana must be recommended by a physician. Mainers for Medical Rights sent 3,000 copies of the booklet to doctors across the state last Thursday. Beane had received requests for 100 more copies when she arrived at work Monday morning. The group has also set up a toll-free number 800-846-1039 for anyone who wants the booklet. She wrote the brochure, with advice from lawyers and national groups that work to legalize the medical use of marijuana. But hers isn't the only group to get questions about how the law works. Sally Sutton, executive director of the Maine Civil Liberties Union which endorsed the law before it passed said she has received calls from doctors wanting to know how the new law works. ''People are trying to figure out what it means and what can be done under it,'' she said. ''It's important that patients get this information, so we're hoping members of the medical community ... share this information.'' The booklet contains a summary of the law, frequently asked questions, a sample form for doctors to give their patients and the complete text of Maine's Medical Marijuana Act.
