U.S. Approves Development of Anti-Marijuana Fungus

Posted by Ron Bennett on December 11, 1998 at 00:04:06 PT
Sure hope they know what they're doing...

The U.S. Congress has allocated 23 million to fund research of a fungus that can kills illicit crops, in particular cannabis plants.
From a recent NORML article at URL:http://www.commonlink.com/~olsen/NORML/WEEKLY/98-12-10.htmlU.S. officials plan on introducing the fungus into several foriegn nations including Columbia, Peru, and Bolivia.NORML Executive Director R. Keith Stroup, Esq. makes the following statements in the article:"We are setting a dangerous precedent by promoting the development of biological agents in the war on marijuana,...""There is a real danger that such a toxic agent may have serious adverse impacts on surrounding plants and the ecosystems of these nations."Representatives Bill McCollum (R-Fla.) and Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) feel this is a potential "silver bullet" in the war on drugs and have pushed for the funding of the killer fungus.

TRUTH and POSITIVITY
When the government trys to control PLants they are setting tyrany upon our people. trying to stop people from thinking and being concious of the true world around them. They try to bring down our pakalolo(healing herb), yet pollute our minds and bodys with thier drugs and pesticides. No matter how they brain wash our youth , what drugs they feed into the system, what biological war they declare on our healing herb,TRUTH and POSITIVITY(not GREED!) will prevail.

Well I would like to say if the government started to legalize cannabis then the world would be a better place to live in! If everyday at like 3pm everyone in the world smoked a fattie! It would be great! Like im talking everyone in the world, cops, presidents, prime ministers, absolutely everyone grabed an OZ. and rolled a big fattie! It would be awesome! From Concerned Citizen

don't criticize it legalize it
i feel weed opens up the brain to new ideas, it widens the imagination, it relaxes you after a hard day at work. More and more teens and adults are gettin introuble with the law over nickel bags of weed. Our tax dollars go to thousands of people sitting in jail because they smoked a little weed or got caught wit some. our money could be going to something more important. over a period of of thousands of years of use no one has ever died because they smoked a couple blunts, but every day hundreds of people die because of alcohol. Everyone needs to chill out . God grew it smoke it.

This shitty government has it all wrong!!!

I agree with almost everyone my best friend has wrecked a muscle car, had two DUI's due to alcohol. Every time I've had trouble with the law is because of liquor. common sense will tell you that alcohol is worse than pot, at least I can function when I am high, unlike alcohol when people are stumbling around and starting fights. Pot should be legal for personal use, and growth, cig's are more addicting than heroin and there legal, that makes alot of fucking sense??? They are making the country unhealthy, alcohol impairs you, I can drive after a nice joint, not after three or four shots, is that telling you something. This government has no right to tell us not to smoke the shit, spending 23 million to eliminate, that is why the economy is so bad. There just to fucking blind to see that, we all have to come together and fight for what makes more sense, these people that are against it are stupid, I want everyone to go to this sit www.lectlaw.com R.Rinkle has some things to say about pot and he it is saying that alcohol is better for you than pot so check it out. There is a small town in California that just voted on a law to legalize the growing for personal use. Everyone in town was for it, maybe the rest of the U.S. should think of doing the same!!

marijuana anti-fungus

what in God's name are these people thinking?Do they actually think that this fungus will totally eradicate all cannibinoids in general. Not very likely. If any of you have done any research on the cartels and the phony war on drugs; you would realize that our government has helped them by using our military resources and personell to subdue the underdogs while the top dogs were cranking out pharmaceutical grade opiates and cocaine in labs protected by their governments armed forces. The only motive here is pure and simple: GREED AND CORRUPTION. While 23 million of our money is grossly misallocated to profit some major lab to develop an anti-fungus that may not work, if successful all it will do is drive up the street cost of marijuana by decreasing supply. And in my opinion, another reason for this concept is merely sound bytes. If you really think that half of the people representing us, or those influencing their decisions really are doing this out of genuine human compassion; then you are a very easily manipulated person. Or a less politically correct word for that would be: fool. Besides, every time man has manipulated nature it has unleashed it's wrath on us. For example, coastal erosion due to coastal oil-drilling. The time has come for all of us to take a stand. Tell every person you know who gives a damn about the future of our planet and health to write to their congressman and voice their opinion on this. Because if you just sit back and smoke a joint and say "Don't worry about it, dude" there is no telling if that will be your last. Even scarier is if it doesn't kill the weed it may kill you. And even if you do not smoke weed (i have quit personally) think about what 23 million dollars coul do. The federal government has rarely ever made a wise decision; or better yet one not motivated by personal gain. Besides, where in the constitution or the Bible does it say "Thou shalt not smoketh of the weed."? Simply put the federal government is stating to feed us dictatorial sugar pills. Without state's sovereignty we have no freedom from the federal government. Do something before it is to late.

FREE THE HERB!!!!!!

Marijuana should be legalized (to an extent). But what everyone needs to realize, is that, your sitting around and waiting for the government to legalize Marijuana isn't helping. Only the legal voters can change the law. As far as this fungus... This is getting a little out of control. When our government spends 23 million of our (the taxpayers) dollars to kill a plant that founded our country and is a very important part of the Homeo-system, thats crazy!! What the lawmakers need to realize, is that, is it right to give someone time in prison because they were smoking Marijuana in the privacy of their own home... WE ARE NOT POSING A THREAT TO SOCIETY!! Look around for a sec. Alcohol and Nicotine, both very addictive, both deadly, both legal? For a drug that does so much good, Why must it be illegal. For those of you who have noticed our country was founded on Hemp. It gives us: ropes, masts, paper, oxygen, and now even a pain reliver. Insted of America trying not to be like other countries(e.g. Measurement, weight, etc.) why don't they go with the flow and LEGALIZE MARIJUANA.

allthough marijauna is supposed to be a gateway drug, i believe that legalizing it would cut down on a lot of the worlds problems. Crime is one example. If weed was legal, people wouldn't have to go through so much, such as drug dealers to get it. It would also cut down on a lot of other things dealing with the way people get weed today.

Why hurt a good thing

If the goverment was to allow the tobacco company's to produce marijuiana smokes, and have them taxed like normal cigs' then and put some rules to them. Everything would be great, but instead we have to be careful about enjoying something special, for fear that we might get put in jail for something that didn't hurt anyone. I enjoy the pleasure of marijuiana much more than I do drinking a nasty beer, Not to mention I don't wake up with a headache (hangover). Canada might be on the way to legalizing marijuiana, so hopefully someone in the oval office will wake up and see that we Americans should be allowed our freedom that we were suppost to have. This Anti-Fungus things is something that is going to just poision the soils of mother earth and add to the deminishing of our earth.

anti marijuana fungus

Oh yeah, like south america imports vast amounts of pot into the USA. Don't y'all grow your own in the USA? This fungus idea is lunacy and will no doubt inadvertantly attack Industrial Hemp plants.Which would suit the US government nicely. If they 'accidentally' eradicate the useful hemp plant along with 'marijuana-assasin of youth' then that would be a bonus.I was wondering what the next big idea would be, considering the recent resurgence of hemp and its products. Anti hemp fungus. Neat.Once again an attack on industrial hemp is trojan-horsed onto the world in the guise of the "war on (natural) drugs"Yeah I agree legalisation is the way forward. Its a little unnatural don't you think to make nature illegal. Ifind it ironic that so many of the devout christians in the anti-drug organisations think that the omnipotent and omniscient God made so many mistakes when it came to 'creating' the plants of the world. Do they really feel that eradicating God's creations is a good idea?Decriminalisation of cannabis works fine in holland (don't believe your govt's hype), but only because the distribution is separated from that of alcohol, nicotine and other hard drugs. For example in britain, a de facto decriminalisation is in place due to widespread police discretion on small amounts of cannabis. This decriminalisation ironically channels more money into the pockets of the gangsters who smuggle and distribute drugs without adding a penny to the government in tax. Legalisation would separate marijuana distribution from the gangsters and the hard drugs and make vendors responsible for who they sell to, rather like the alcohol industry. The money spent on pot could be taxed instead of going to the gangsters and being spent on baseball bats and fast cars.keep it cleanboyner

If we mess with Mother Nature we will pay the price! We sure have in the past! We are at war with the invisible world of microbes and they want to win as much as we humans do! When you mess with the ecology you will cause chaos! Each plant and animal was put on this earth for a reason, I believe and we don't have the right to eliminate what God gave us! My mother always told me, "If you play with fire, sooner or later you will be burned." I hope that the ones who approved this stupid move are the ONLY ones to get burned, but you can bet that it won't be that way. We all have to suffer because of their (governments) refusal to face facts and make rational, logical, adult decisions..Is this what they think is best for the people? I personally think that this killer fungus will turn around and kill very valuable crops and 50 years from now in the news they will be talking about how stupid our government was at this point in time...In fact, it may evern end up killing their favorite crop "corn" for their corn liquor...tobacco for their cigarettes, coffee beans, I hope they don't think that a killer fungus will stay here in the USA, it will travel...Our government will be the cause for starvation...sad S.O.B.'s........

Genetics is Great...Especially for Killer Bees!

The more one plays with genetics, the more risk there is of major problems...it's already happened several times. The accidental release of Killer Bees in 1956 should be a warning of what can happen when we mess with genetics without complete understanding. As far as this so-called killer fungus...what happens when cannabis and/or other crops becomes resistant? Or worse the fungus mutates in some way that is totally unexpected like Killer Bees did and kills other crops or even more scary what if the fungus is harmful to people who are exposed...and lastly, what if the fungus turns on its creators and actually becomes helpful to the plants it was designed to kill such as cannabis...while I wouldn't mind that, it's probably something they've given little thought.
