Groups that contend voters just didn't get it when they passed a medical marijuana initiative twice in the past three years are blowing smoke, according to the latest Rocky Mountain Poll.
In fact, more than seven of 10 registered Maricopa County voters polled said they would vote again for the measure, which established a state-controlled network for the distribution of medical marijuana. The measure passed by a 2-1 ratio when it was voted on last year, but the Legislature altered it. Petitions are being circulated to put the measure on the ballot for the 2000 general election. Dead or Alive? ...Lawmakers couldn't agree on much during a disastrous two-day session this week. Not even on the fortunes of comedian Foster Brooks. In a Senate caucus Tuesday on the gun bill, Sen. Marc Spitzer responded to concerns that it was impossible to legislate morality. Spitzer, R-north central Phoenix, countered that tough drunken-driving laws had changed society's view of alcohol. "Foster Brooks is out of a job because the mores of society have changed," Spitzer said of the man who made a career out of acting like he was drunk. The argument didn't fly with colleagues. "He's dead. That's why he's out of a job!" bellowed Sen. John Wettaw, R-Flagstaff. For the record, Brooks, a former Match Game PM panelist and star of Cannonball Run II, is 87. Quote of the week ..."You can't legislate intelligence. If so, we would have passed a law a long time ago to help David Leibowitz." -- State Sen. Scott Bundgaard, R-Phoenix, comparing a bill aimed at curbing random gunfire to the occasional Arizona Republic columnist, who coined the term "90 Dwarfs" when referring to the Legislature.
