LOS ANGELES, The national drug education program Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) America has filed a $50 million lawsuit accusing Rolling Stone magazine of libeling the program.
The lawsuit, filed today in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, alleges that the magazine published an article that the group contends was "filled with fabricated quotations" and "sensational information fraudulently accusing D.A.R.E. of being operated as a criminal enterprise." D.A.R.E. officials claimed the group's reputation was maligned by the article in Rolling Stone last March. Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner and editor Robert Love are also named as defendants. The lawsuit says the article accused D.A.R.E. of trying to "silence critics, suppress scientific research and punish non-believers." The lawsuit further contends that D.A.R.E. "is and operates as the very antithesis of a criminal organization and did not and would not _ ever engage in criminal acts as claimed by Rolling Stone." D.A.R.E. is an anti-drug program led by local police officers in school classrooms throughout the country, with programs in more than 10, 000 U.S. cities.
