The Dakota County sheriff's department has completed a three week investigation into a controversial traffic stop involving the adult son of U.S. Sen. Rod Grams and some Anoka County deputies who might have looked the other way last July.
Morgan Grams got a free ride home in July even though the deputies found marijuana and beer cans inside the unauthorized rental car he was driving. Willie Wichman, a juvenile in the car, was arrested, convicted and jailed. Wichman said police showed favoritism toward Morgan Grams because he is the son of a senator. "He got special treatment because he is who he is," Wichman said. "If it was anybody else, we all would have went to jail." Unidentified sources close to the investigation told WCCO-TV that the report indicates deputies did not follow standard police procedures during the stop. It will also suggest Rod Grams did not ask for special favors from his hometown sheriff. Rod Grams had called Anoka deputies that night to help find his son but said he never asked for special treatment. "I don't love what my son did, but I love my son," Rod Grams said last month. "I never tried to get between him and the law before and I won't do it now. And I told him that anything he has done, he has to be accountable for." Because of possible conflicts of interest, Dakota County investigated the incident and the Washington County attorney will decide what charges, if any, will be filed. The Grams report is scheduled to be released on Friday, WCCO-TV reported.
