Singapore Couple Jailed for Pot in Australia

A young couple have been sentenced to a year in a Singapore jail for using marijuana while they were studying in Australia, an official said Tuesday.
Gavin Seow, 28, and Lynn Cheok, 22, were stopped for a random drug test at a Singapore border checkpoint, a Central Narcotics Bureau spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity.The two, who are engaged to be married, were sentenced for drug consumption after their urine samples tested positive for marijuana.Seow and Cheok, who had been living in Australia for three years, had reportedly used the drug at an end-of-exams party in Perth three weeks before they were tested.Singapore citizens and permanent residents who use illegal drugs while abroad can be punished under a law enacted in July 1998, the spokesman said. Some are stopped at the border for testing.If Singaporeans "consume overseas and test positive, they'll be charged accordingly, as if they'd taken the drugs in Singapore," the spokesman said.The tightly controlled city-state is known for its tough drug laws, which include death by hanging for those trafficking in heroin, marijuana and some other drugs.Seow had been studying film and television at the Central Metropolitan College of Tafe in Perth, while Cheok had been studying mass communications at Curtin University of Technology in the same city, The Straits Times newspaper said.
