I know I must seem like the neighbor to when you say, "If there's anything I can do to help, don't hesitate to ask," and the next thing you know you're painting his garage, but now is the intensive time of my defense.
If you could send a letter to the New York Times about the article I sent earlier today (copy below) with your thoughts on what the government is doing to me, I would appreciate it. The New York Times is the "paper of record" and letters indicate the level of interest in a story.letters nytimes.comThank you.Enjoy,PeterDrugSense FOCUS Alert # 135http://www.mapinc.org/alert/0135.html McWilliams Not Allowed To Use Medical Defensehttp://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread3591.shtmlNew York Times Article:LA Drug Case Bars Medical Marijuana Defense - 11/07/99http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread3585.shtmlVote On Medical Marijuanahttp://www.vote.com/Fully Informed Jury Associationhttp://www.fija.org/215 NOW!http://www.215now.com/Medical Marijuana Magazinehttp://MarijuanaMagazine.com/McWilliams.comhttp://McWilliams.com/PeterTrialhttp://www.petertrial.com/ Todd McCormick's Grow Medicinehttp://growmedicine.com/Renee Boje's Legal Defense Fundhttp://thecompassionclub.org/renee

My own two cents worth...
Dear Sirs, The readers of the Times may know by now of the case of author Peter McWilliams, who despite it being legal in his State to use marijuana as medicine, is being viciously prosecuted - and persecuted - by the Federal government for having done so. This persecution has meaning that goes far beyond the welfare of one individual, or the challenge posed by a controversial law. It goes beyond the concepts of Federal suzerainity over the need for State's Rights. It goes to the heart of democracy, itself. On the personal level, the Feds are trying to kill McWilliams. Of course, they vehemently deny this. They will tell you that they are only upholding the law. (Children? Can you say, "Nuremberg Defense"?) But the use of pot has kept the deadly effects of the AIDS-Wasting Syndrome he suffers from at bay by stimulating appetite and stemming nausea, as it has done so for AIDS and cancer victims alike. And he has been quite vocal about his support - which, evidently, the Feds cannot stand. They cannot stand to have a 62 year long policy, born of racial prejudice, to be questioned. So, without breaking a sweat, they will be able to kill him...legally. For to deprive him and others of this de facto medicine is to automatically condemn them to a miserable death, without having to lift a finger. Whether by gun, poison - or just plain smug officiousness - it's still murder. No, this matter has even greater import, for all of us. What is happening here is that the Federal government can now nullify any law it likes to. Whether that law became a law by demonstrable public support (as voters did in the District of Columbia last year, likewise, voters in States as diverse as Washington and Maine, ) via referendum is of no concern to them. In other words, democracy itself is of no consequence to them. And these are people who are sworn to upholding the very thing they tread upon. You don't have to be Hamlet to smell something rotten, here.

Going to it...
Been writing everyone I can think of... representatives, newspapers, television stations. I still feel that there has to be a solution though. I feel that this is the wave that will change the tide. I will follow up with any other suggestions there are. I honestly wish there were a way to set up a physical protest. I think that it would gain the attention deserved here. I am near Sacramento, so if anyone eles is near... let's talk.Peter... we are all at work...hang in... We love ya!!

letter to the NY Times
Here is the text of my letter to the NY Times. I hope it helps ...To Whom It Concerns:It is imperative that America embarks immediately into a discussion of why the federal government is so intent on locking terminally ill people up for choosing a medicine that works. The fanaticism with which federal judges and prosecutors pursue Peter McWilliams and others who want to help sick people is almost impossible to believe, if not for the fact of the prosecutions. These trials, the confiscation of birdseed shipments, and the deaths of marijuana users during apprehension or incarceration all indicate an out-of-control government that is out of touch with mainstream thought.Peter McWilliams will probably die soon, separated from his medicine of choice by a federal process that is just that: a process that has no consideration for the misery that it is causing, and will further cause if it suceeds. Please help this country to heal. There is so much REAL danger in America that we must stop trying to lock up all who want to use marijuana for medicine. The argument that Congress passed a law stating that marijuana has NO medical value flies in the face of the IOM report, that was comissioned by the Drug Czar. The IOM report says that marijuana HAS some medical value, the federal government is today providing marijuana to eight individuals for medical use and there are many respectedorganizations including the AMA that say that marijuana is useful. How can the federal courts in California continue this witch hunt? Why do they do it? Please investigate and tell us why. We need your help.Thank You for your attention.Peace to all.
