HALTOM CITY The Birdville school district's Foundation for Educational Excellence is posting a $500 bounty on Heroin in the district's high schools!
Information leading to the arrest and indictment of anyone possessing or selling heroin at Richland and Haltom high schools or at the Shannon Learning Center will be rewarded in cash."I hope it has such an impact that anyone thinking of that particular drug will be very leery about bringing it on campus," school board President Fred Wilson said. The rewards will be administered by Tarrant County Crime Stoppers, which will offer up to an additional $1,000 for tips leading to felony arrests and indictments. The foundation, which funds innovative educational programs and gives assistance to students from low-income families, turned its efforts to heroin after a string of heroin-related deaths in greater Northeast Tarrant County."The message is that we are supportive of a safe, drug-free environment," said David Brewer, Birdville district associate superintendent of finance. "That's what every student deserves."Since the foundation's inception in 1996, it has built a $1.4 million balance and has donated money to projects such as school uniforms at the district academies.Since October 1996, 16 deaths involving greater Northeast Tarrant County residents have been linked to heroin. The most recent string of heroin-related deaths began Sept. 29 when a 32-year-old Bedford woman died from a mixture of drugs that included heroin and cocaine, authorities said.In October and November, the deaths of four Northeast Tarrant residents -- a 21-year- old Haltom City man, an 18- year-old Bedford woman, a 19- year-old North Richland Hills woman and a 48-year-old Bedford man -- were linked to heroin, according to autopsy reports. On Jan. 12, a Southlake teen- ager who had a history of heroin use died. The cause of his death has not been determined. The deaths have shocked parents and have prompted police, city and school officials to launch anti-drug programs and policies. The 13-member foundation board, composed of area business leaders and Birdville administrators and trustees, wants to extend the bounty plan to Birdville High School when it opens next year, Wilson said.Tarrant County Crime Stoppers can be reached at 469- TIPS. Callers receive a number code to remain anonymous.Star-Telegram Staff Writer Matt Frazier, (817) 685-3852Send your comments to frazier star-telegram.com
