PORTLAND, Maine Public support for a referendum that would legalizing medical use of marijuana in Maine is slipping, according to a new statewide poll.
The poll by Critical Insights of Portland also found that most voters surveyed back an effort to ban so-called ''partial birth'' abortions in Maine. The poll, released Monday, also found strong support for Nov. 2 bond issues that would provide money for public lands, the state's technical college system, environmental protections and transportation improvements. It found that a bond issue to borrow $9.4 million to help Maine Public Broadcasting Corp. meet a federal mandate to convert to digital broadcasting is gaining support. The poll results were based on telephone interviews with about 400 likely voters from Oct. 15 through Oct. 17. The poll has a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points. About 58 percent of likely voters support the referendum to legalize medical marijuana, while 33 percent oppose it and 9 percent haven't decided, the poll found. A poll Critical Insights conducted in September pegged support at 68 percent, with 29 percent opposed and 3 percent undecided. The poll found that 50 percent of those surveyed support the proposed ban on partial-birth abortions, while 40 percent oppose it. The rest either had not yet decided or did not want to share their opinions on the referendum. The numbers did not change much from the September poll, which listed 53 percent supporting the ban and 39 percent opposing it. In September, Critical Insights found most surveyed, about 55 percent, did not support the public television bond. But the tide seems to have turned, with 51 percent of those surveyed in October reporting they support it and 36 percent opposing it. The other four bond issues continued to garner support from the majority of those surveyed in October, the poll found. A $56 million bond issue to finance a range of transportation projects is supported by 57 percent of likely voters and opposed by 30 percent. A $12.5 million environmental bond for sewage plants, landfill closings, tire-pile cleanups and other projects was supported by 83 percent of likely voters and opposed by only 13 percent. A $26.4 million bond to modernize the Maine Technical College System's seven campuses has the backing of 72 percent of likely voters, with 19 percent opposed. And a $50 million bond to buy more public land received support from 62 percent of those polled, compared to 28 percent who said they opposed it.
