Police used a cargo net slung from a helicopter to lift an estimated $10 million worth of marijuana from a near-vertical five-acre field in the Columbia River Gorge on Friday and Saturday.
Now, police are looking for the people who ran the illegal operation, which the Skamania County sheriff said probably yielded the largest marijuana seizure in his county's history. Some of the 5,000 plants pulled from the field were eight to 10 feet tall, according to Sheriff Charles R. Bryan, who said investigators had been working on the case for most of a month. A flyover pinpointed the site of the marijuana plantation, which is at about 1,500 feet elevation in the gorge. The sheriff said there obviously had been armed guards posted to protect the area, which is near Dog Creek, not far from Washington 14 and about eight miles west of White Salmon, Wash. In addition to the plants, police found weapons, camping gear and a 15-by-30-foot drying shed that was full of marijuana. Bryan said the location of the marijuana plantation raises concerns, because "this is in an area where people like to hike in the gorge scenic area. A tourist could have just walked right into this and could have gotten killed or hurt." The helicopter that lifted the bundled marijuana plants was supplied by the Washington Army National Guard Counterdrug Task Force Interdiction Unit from Camp Murray. "It saved us lots of time," the sheriff said. About 20 officers from the Skamania County sheriff's office, the Clark/Skamania Drug Task Force and the U.S. Forest Service took part in the two-day mission. Bryan said the marijuana plantation appeared to have been at least a couple of years old.Tuesday, October 19, 1999Copyright 1999, Oregon Live ®
