Medical Marijuana Alert: The Battle is On!

DRC Net Action Alert

If you've been reading DRCNet, you know that the people of Washington, DC passed a pro-medical marijuana initiative by an overwhelming margin last year, but hard-line drug warriors in Congress -- principally Rep. Bob Barr of Georgia -- prevented the vote from even being counted for more than 10 months.
And you know that a federal court found Barr's vote-suppression law unconstitutional, and the vote has now been released -- but Barr and his allies have vowed to overturn DC's democratic, voter-approved medical marijuana initiative through an act of Congress. Since we wrote you last on this issue, legislation has been introduced in the House and the Senate that would overturn the will of the voters on medical marijuana, and Congress is preparing to vote on them, and soon. But because the issue is not only medical marijuana, but democracy itself, there's a real chance that enough members of Congress could vote our way to save medical marijuana in Washington. Congress has 30 "working days" to move against DC's medical marijuana initiative, so the battle is on now. If you haven't yet written Congress on this issue, we need you to do so now; and if you have written, we need you to write your representative and your two senators again, with the numbers of the legislation you want them to oppose: H.R. 2959 and H.J. Res. 69 in the House (by Rep. Bob Barr, R-GA) and S.J. Res. 35 in the Senate (by Sen. George Voinovich, R-OH). DRCNet is collaborating with other organizations working on this effort, so this time we are asking you to visit a web site sponsored by our friends at the Marijuana Policy Project. Please visit http://www.mpp.org/i59/ to send an e-mail or fax to Congress, find your reps' phone numbers to call, and tell your friends so they can take action on this urgent matter too. Patients shouldn't go to prison for taking the medicine they need to survive! Please stand up for their rights and write Congress today. DrugSense FOCUS Alert #131 October 13, 1999
Is Congress More Concerned With Posturing Than Democracy? Washington Posthttp://washingtonpost.com/ PLEASE COPY AND DISTRIBUTEDrugSense FOCUS Alert #131 October 13, 1999 While it used to be easy for politicians to take a "zero tolerance" stand on any illegal drug issue, now their constituents are making such simple-minded moves much tougher. A recent report from the Washington Post (below) indicates that many members of congress aren't sure whether to kill Washington D.C.'s medical marijuana initiative, I-59. The measure was passed overwhelmingly by D.C. voters last year, but the official results of the vote have only recently been announced, thanks to congressional moves to keep the results a secret. Now that the world knows how people in the District of Columbia voted, some in the U.S. Congress want to nullify that vote. Please write a letter to the Post to express amazement that any elected official would favor a "tough-on-drugs" stance over supporting the will of the people. Please also contact your own congressional representatives to urge them not to kill I-59 by using the links below. Thanks for your effort and support. WRITE A LETTER TODAYJust DO it!
