OTTAWA The federal government is looking south of the border to score some marijuana for research, although Ottawa eventually wants to grow its own.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse, run by the U.S. government, has the only licence in the U.S. to legally grow cannabis. The agency is one of the organizations the Canadian government has approached for an interim supply of marijuana so it can begin clinical trials early next year. The agency has been growing marijuana legally for nearly 20 years for use in lab experiments and medical research studies, said spokesman Stephen Gust. The plants are cultivated on a farm near the University of Mississippi under heavy guard. "It is a secure facility," Gust said. "It's a fenced and guarded facility that is adjacent to the university there." Gust said the institute is looking to see if it has enough marijuana to meet Ottawa's needs. "There has to be consideration of the amount available in terms of what their needs would be, immediate needs and also expected needs in the future." Eventually, Ottawa wants to grow its own. And Gust said the institute could offer Canada advice on how to set up its own supply of marijuana. He thinks a decent crop could be established within a year or two. The clinical trials set to begin on the medical effectiveness of marijuana in treating pain and other symptoms in seriously ill people were announced recently by Health Minister Alan Rock. Some 250 Canadians are to take part.
