ROTTERDAM, A home for elderly drug addicts, billed as the first of its kind, will soon open its doors to narcotics users in the Dutch port city of Rotterdam, the founders said on Friday.
A group of seven elderly addicts will be the first to take up residence in the home, located at a secret address, the Rotterdam Junkie Association said. "They are all over the age of 55. The home will open as soon as possible. It would be nice if that could happen in a matter of weeks," a spokeswoman told Reuters. Addicts interviewed by Dutch radio said they were looking forward to the prospect of ending their days in the company of other drug users. "You can't really imagine shooting up while you are sitting in the day-room next to a retired lawyer," said one. Liberal Dutch drug policies have raised the ire of several countires in recent years, including France and the U.S. Soft drugs like marijuana are tolerated in the Netherlands. Possession of hard drugs is illegal, but in practice the police rarely prosecute cases involving small quantities.
