A record-setting marijuana seizure east of Edmonton will be but a short-term setback for the illegal dope trade, Mounties said yesterday.
"Obviously that puts a huge dent in the bud marijuana that's available on the streets," said RCMP Staff Sgt. Doug Carruthers, who heads up K-Division's drug section. "I think more seriously it goes to show that the marijuana industry in Alberta is alive and well."There's marijuana all over the place."Wednesday's bust near Willingdon, 160 km east of Edmonton, netted 7,000 plants, 5,000 of them harvested and drying and only days short of hitting the streets. The other 2,000 plants were nearing maturity in the fields of the 33-acre ganja ranch, the largest Mounties in Alberta have ever seen."We do take down a lot of hydro(ponic) grows of a thousand plants - our other biggest one was 3,000 and several that are in the hundreds," Carruthers said. "But boy - 7,000 plants. That's massive."The enormous haul would have yielded approximately 14,000 ounces of dope worth a minimum of $4.2 million, Carruthers said."That's a lot of ounces of marijuana that can sell for about $200 or $300," he said.Hydroponic crops require huge amounts of electricity to run the high-powered lights necessary but have the advantage of being easy to hide as well as being more productive.Mounties took the seized plants and destroyed them Wednesday in the Fort Saskatchewan hospital incinerator.Friday, October 1, 1999
