WASHINGTON Republicans criticized President Clinton today for vetoing Congress' budget for the District of Columbia, saying he did it to defend ''really left-wing social programs.''
Clinton vetoed the measure Tuesday, objecting that lawmakers had added restrictions that would have prevented residents from ''making their own decisions about local matters.'' The budget as drafted on Capitol Hill would have prevented the district from taking a number of actions, including spending its own funds to lobby for voting rights for its citizens and allowing the use of marijuana for medical purposes. ''The president vetoed this bill because of some really left-wing social programs,'' Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, R-Miss., told reporters. ''Congress should not impose such conditions on the District of Columbia,'' Clinton said Tuesday in a statement. Addressing some Republicans' threats that a veto could jeopardize the district's funding, he said it was ''wrong for some in Congress to threaten to cut funding that would fight crime, expand educational opportunity ... and improve children's health.'' Although the measure would govern how the district could spend the entire $5.1 billion budget, the federal government would provide less than one-tenth of the total, $429 million, with local taxes and fees providing the rest.By Associated Press, 09/29/99 12:41 Marijuana Policy Project's Web Sitehttp://www.mpp.org/ACT UP Washington DChttp://www.actupdc.org/President Vetoes D.C. You're Right!
We sure should be able to be responsible for our own health if we so choose in a democracy. Most self employed people can't afford medical insurance so alternative medicine is the way many go, because it is easier to prevent getting sick, then our systems way of trying to fix us when we get sick.Peace, FoM!

Take that and shove it up your butt Bob Barr
Thank God Clinton vetoed this bill! It should show all conservatives, and GOP'ers that this 1999, and we are approaching 2000, and yes, we do have the right to choose an alternative method of health care.
