Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley admitted Sunday on ABC that he has used marijuana "several times" in his life, then prompted talk show host Sam Donaldson to admit he too has used the drug.
Bradley, appearing on ABC's Sunday morning "This Week" show, was asked by Donaldson during a discussion of presidential candidate George W. Bush's alleged past drug use if Bradley himself had ever used illegal drugs."I have used marijuana several times in my life, but never cocaine," Bradley said.Moments later, Bradley asked Donaldson if he had ever used illegal drugs, to which Donaldson replied, "I think a couple of times I've tried it. And I inhaled."Bradley also asked Donaldson's co-hosts, Cokie Roberts and George Will, the same question, with both replying no."Oh listen, I was so pregnant during those years," Roberts said."No. I'm from the Falstaff generation," Will said, apparently referring to Falstaff beer.At that point, Roberts changed the subject to guns and violence.During the show, Bradley said he did not consult with military officials before telling a gay and lesbian magazine that homosexuals should be permitted to serve openly in the military."This is a statement of my personal views, my personal belief that gays should be allowed to serve openly in the military," the candidate said. In an interview with the Advocate, the former New Jersey senator said gays also should be protected under the 1964 Civil Rights Act.Bradley was asked whether he consulted with senior military officials about why they view the armed services differently from other areas of government where gays serve openly. Bradley said he did not and did not see a need to.On other Sunday morning news shows:Buchanan banter: Presidential candidate Pat Buchanan said on CBS' "Face the Nation" that Republican leaders were rigging the nominating process to aid Texas Gov. George W. Bush at the peril of social issues such as abortion. He reiterated that he is "dead serious in considering shifting from the Republican Party to run for the nomination of the Reform Party."Quayle on GOP: Republican candidate Dan Quayle, appearing on "Fox News Sunday," said the GOP should try to pull the Reform Party back into the Republican fold.September 20, 1999Chicago Sun Times
