Group Blasts US Funding - Anti-Drug Killer Fungus!

WASHINGTON, DC The United States government is spending $23 million to develop a killer fungus to wipe out marijuana plants a dangerous plan that could cause an environmental catastrophe, said the Libertarian Party today.
"This project is the political equivalent of athlete's foot fungus: It's nasty, it's dangerous, and it needs to be stopped before it spreads," said LP National Director Steve Dasbach. "The last thing we need is a bio-engineered killer fungus turned loose on the world."Late last year, Congress passed legislation that authorized $23 million for research into soil-borne fungi called "mycoherbicides," which will attack and kill marijuana plants, poppy plants, and coca plants. When developed, the fungus could be released in such South American countries as Colombia, Peru, and Bolivia, said U.S. officials. The legislation was guided through Congress by U.S.Representatives Bill McCollum (R-FL) and Mike DeWine (R-OH), who saidthe killer fungus was potentially a "silver bullet" in the War onDrugs. But Libertarians say the tax-subsidized fungus is a "biohazard" that could have a disastrous impact on the ecosystems of the target nations -- and, potentially, the whole world."In the government's irresponsible search for a quick-fix in the War on Drugs, politicians could cause terrifying long-term ecological problems," warned Dasbach. According to scientists, the killer fungus could..* Attack other plants, wiping out valuable cash crops. "For example, a chemical alkaloid similar to the one thatproduces cocaine is present in many legal plants -- including tobaccoand coffee beans," said Dasbach. "In an effort to wipe out drugs, thiskiller fungus could wipe out the livelihood of millions of farmers." Cause many plants to develop stronger chemical defensesagainst the fungus, which could then mutate and spread to other, harmful plants."According to scientists, mutated plants could pass on theseresistant genes and create herbicide-resistant weeds, which could havea ruinous effect on farm yields," he said. "With world hunger already a problem, why risk making it worse?" Wipe out industrial hemp plants, which are legal in everymajor industrialized country outside the United States. "No fungus is smart enough to tell the difference between legal hemp and illegal marijuana," noted Dasbach. "This fungus could be the biological warfare equivalent of carpet bombing -- killing whatever is in its path." What should Americans do about this dangerous program? Telltheir Congressional representatives to apply a strong dose of political fungicide to "cure" it, said Dasbach. "This tax-funded fungus should be treated like any dangerousmold or mildew -- exposed to sunlight and wiped clean. Congress shouldjust say no to biological warfare."Dasbach also said Libertarians have a better way to reduce the consumption of marijuana, with no environmental risks: Legalize it.In the Netherlands, he noted, where marijuana isdecriminalized, drug use is half that of the United States. In fact, anew study revealed that while 32.9% of Americans have tried marijuana, only 15.6% of Dutch adults have done so. "Treating adults like adults -- and letting them make decisions about how to live their lives -- seems to have a stronger anti-drug effect than any killer fungus," said Dasbach. "Wouldn't it be ironic if liberty was a more effective anti-drug program than deadly mycoherbicides?"Dan CloreThe Website of Lord We˙rdgliffe:http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/9879/index.htmlWelcome to the Waughters....The Dan Clore Necronomicon Page:http://www.geocities.com/SoHo/9879/necpage.htmBecause the true mysteries cannot be profaned....

What a truly ridiculous idea this is and as usual, Governments continue to waste tax payers money! I have a better idea - why dont the dictators that masquerade as democratic leaders all go and live in an ivory tower together. They can take their oppressive, biased attitudes and laws, their bombs, tanks, gases and foolishness with them, whilst the rest of us enjoy the world as it is. Mary Jane never killled anyone so what's the problem. How about the government rid the world of things the tax payers actualy want rid off like poverty, starvation, disease and politicians. So Mr Bush - it's cool to electricute humans, to be an active member of the KKK and drop nuclear bombs on innocant people living on such a fragile planet but we can't have an electorate smoking naturally growing crops for recreational or medicinal reasons can we - i mean that's just evil isn't it.

It's about Time!
I fully agree that we should wipe out the marijuana plants. So what if Washington grew it, that was for rope! Now that it has been abused, we should all send $1.00 to the U.S. Federal Government to support the development of this wonderful weapon that will save lives of border patrol officers who otherwise will have to deal with external drug cartels (yes, I know a great deal is grown in-house, but the fields in S.America are much larger still). With hope, the fungus won't just kill the crops, it'll kill those tending them too!!!

Killer Fungus
We shouldn't mess with Mother Nature unless we want something to go wrong. This is a Biological Weapon and we complain about other countries but what about what we in the United States are doing?

That's stupid! Marijuana should be made legal, not destroyed! It's a part of our history! Both Washington and Jefferson grew it, the constitution was written on hemp paper, and the 1st u.s. flag was made out of hemp cloth! Also, 1 acre of hemp plant will produce as much fiber for paper as 4 acres of trees! Hell, it might even cure AIDS! It's probably the best plant out there, yet, Ironically, it's illegal!!!

Killer Fungus
When I saw that it would destroy coca plants, I wondered: What about the chocolate industry? If this stuff kills coca plants, will we have to develop synthetic chocolate to replace that which is lost because of this fungus? Never mind about the fungus causing other plants to mutate, first, how do they know it won't just kill any or all plants it comes into contact with? Second, What if it mutates and either kills all plants, or, starts attacking animals and humans? Stop the fungus!! It's unconstitutional!! I fully agree with the Libertarians: If you want drug use to decrease, then legalize. Has no politician ever heard of the "forbidden fruit" factor? It's the same factor that makes all those married politicians go out and have affairs. This is Prohibition all over again. When will they see what happens when the government tries to dictate peoples moral and ethical choices?
