Castro Valley It's unlikely the discovery of a $2 million marijuana patch will lead to any arrests, said Alameda County sheriff's spokesman Lt. Dave Hoig.
The pot was grown in the hills between Pleasanton and Castro Valley, an area that is unpopulated and very secluded, said Hoig. The crop may have been maintained by illegal immigrants, repaying a debt for being smuggled into the country, he said. About 500 plants - from 4 to 6 feet tall and valued at more that $2 million - were found last weekend by hikers who literally stumbled upon them. Hoig said hikers who come across marijuana fields should turn around and walk away and report the find to local authorities. "You don't know how aggressive these guys are gonna be and there's no point in hanging out in the open country like that," he said, adding that although uncommon here, many Northern California pot farms have booby traps designed to deter theft. Last weekend's find was the largest pot find in the south county area since September 1996 when about 1,000 plants worth about $10 million were found on land southeast of Sunol. Last month, Oakland police officers discovered an indoor marijuana farm in downtown Oakland. The building just off of the Broadway Auto Row contained more than 2,000 plants - ranging in size from seedlings to six feet tall - all grown with a sophisticated lighting system.
