After the Cook County Sheriff's Police made a major marijuana discovery in the far south suburban forest preserves last week, they decided it might be worth flying around the area to see what else they might find.
It paid off. On Wednesday, they announced their second big pot find in a week--about 4,000 plants scattered over 4 acres near 183rd and Central, near Tinley Park. Estimated street value: $12 million. It followed the discovery, announced last week, of 1,300 plants about a half mile to the south. No one has been arrested yet. Police have several suspects, said John Rita, commander of the sheriff's police gang crimes unit. The first find came as a result of an informant's tip, but the second pot plantation was spotted from the air Tuesday by federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents who'd been asked by sheriff's police to fly over the area. And unlike the first discovery, cultivators of the second field had begun their harvest. About 200 plants had been cut down and hung out to dry under a protective plastic tarp strung up in the treetops.September 16, 1999Chicago Sun Times
