A Keystone Heights couple facing felony charges after the man's 11-year-old son turned them in for growing marijuana will be arraigned tomorrow morning in Circuit Court.
Michael Callaway and Kathrine Callaway, the boy's stepmother, are charged with cultivating, possessing and selling marijuana at their mobile home on County Road 214.They were arrested at their home Aug. 31 and more than 200 marijuana plants, a pound of cannabis seeds, scales and other paraphernalia were seized by the Clay County Sheriff's Office. The arrest culminated an undercover investigation that began several days earlier when Michael Callaway's son told his grandmother that his father and stepmother were growing marijuana at home.Mary Justino, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said the child even sneaked a bag of pot out of his dad's house and gave it to his grandmother as proof. The grandmother called the boy's birth mother, Debra Romanello, who has temporary custody of the child pending the outcome of the case. Romanello said she was proud of her son for doing ''the right thing.''''He made a very difficult decision, but he made the right decision,'' she said. ''He loves his dad. He did not do this to be mean or to stir up problems.''Law enforcement authorities said the child told them he was encouraged to report the alleged crimes by what he had learned in a Drug Abuse Resistance Education program at McRae Elementary School.Asked to comment about the child's statement, the DARE officer in the Keystone Heights area, Deputy Maria Goldman, said she knew the youngster made a tough decision.''In reference to the program it makes me feel very good,'' Goldman said, adding that the child's overriding concern was not getting his father and stepmother in trouble with the law, but getting them some help.''He wanted to know if his dad and step mom would get help,'' she said. ''That was his biggest concern.''Meanwhile, the child is living with his mother, who is remarried and has two other children. She was granted temporary full custody of her son in a Circuit Court hearing Sept. 8.Romanello said she wanted to publicly thank the sheriff's office and individual officers for their professionalism and sensitivity when they went to arrest her son's father and stepmother.''I think the Clay County Sheriff's Office deserves a pat on the back,'' she said. ''Every officer patted my son on the head and told him they knew he loved his dad, but that he did the right thing.''They also waited until after the boy's father and stepmother were out of the child's view, before handcuffing them.Tuesday, September 14, 1999Florida -Times UnionDARE Program Not Effective - 8/04/99 http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread2341.shtml

thanks for the post ive been researching the dare program its good to have some input. yes smoking a quarter ounce a day or more day after day (i used to do so in college, not anymore) sows u dow it effects your motor skills to some degree and can make your short term memory spotty. but i often have had more trouble remebering a night of drinkin than a night of pot smoking. but according to your post your 15 i wouldnt condone u smoking just yet :) your brain synapses and personality are still forming i didnt smoke till i was 18 for the first time and perhaps 20 or so would have been more appropriate (if only so i had my priorities more in order) stay safe friend and always question what your told no matter what think for yourself and research for yourself. truth and moderation in all things!

An 11 year old turning in his parents?!? ...
DARE is, to quote a few previosr writers, Brainwashing. I took it 5 years ago when I was 10,Since then I have gone through two other programs like it. NONE of the facts that I learned about MArijuana in those programs were true, except that over time, and with a lot of smoking, it slows down your reaction speed. DARE is, if I may compare the two, which i rather believe they deserve eachother... is like the Nazi's Propoganda during WW II. It's all brainwashing, the only thing that's changed is that this time the "Evil" is MArijuana, not the Jews.

Talk to your school officials
I am on a campaign with my childrens school system. They are seriously considering alternatives which is good. Maybe I had an influence. After reporting this to the superindendent she is more aware of the problem. She said she talked to the sheriff and his only good point was DARE makes kids like policemen. I said right they are not afraid but they also turn in their parents. I asked her hat is more important family or police?I also pointed out that I did not need the police in my classroom to know to respect them for the job they do.But the problem might lie in the replacement. Has anyone heard of a program called Alert? Apparently it is aimed at the 9-12 group and quite possibly K-8 too. If it is another DARE thingy then we are in trouble. We may be making headroads in the ballot box and courts but I really fear what they are doing to my children. Yes Nazi brainwashing is alive and many learned the techniques and are using them in subtle ways.Rainbow

History repeats itself
In Soviet Russia in the 1930's, the NKVD (the precursor of the KGB) would show up at school to encourage schoolchildren to turn in their parents if they showed any 'anti-revolutuionary' sentiments. They told the kids that the friendly NKVD man would only just 'talk' to the parents and straighten them out. One kid, not having the sense to realize that this was a trap, did rat on his parents for having complained about their lousy situation in the Worker's Paradise. He was put in a foster home. His parents were arrested, jailed, beaten and eventually killed. The kid was awarded a high honor. The authorities even made a statue to the him. But no one would have anything to do with the little snitch. He had no friends, for fear he might turn them in, too. The entire town shunned him. The kid later committed suicide.Santayana said that those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.Looks like we haven't learned a thing.

insanity
yea when this little brat grows up gets a clue realized hes been brainwashed when he goes to college or high school and smokes hie first joint then how will he live with himself? encouraging children to turn in family and their friend for drug offenses is ridicilous. where were these brainwashed hawks when bill clinton was tokin weed or george bush jr was snortin coke? i remember the drug "education" programs when i was in grade school and the lies and bullshit that was contained in them. there is an evil in using drugs but that is more related to the culture and cost that prohibition has place on drugs and pushed them to the streets. that is what is evil in the drug war. i hope this child has access to a good psychlogist when he gets older, for if he truely loves his father then how will he deal with sending them to jail for a lie? truth and moderation in all things!
