HOLLISTER, Calif. A marijuana bust in remote San Benito County mountains could become the second largest in state history. At least 25,000 marijuana plants have been destroyed since last weekend in the mountains about 135 miles southeast of San Francisco, according to law-enforcement officials.
Agents said it appears that another 25,000-30,000 pot plants are growing in hard-to-reach canyons around of 5,248-foot San Benito Mountain. At a street value of $2,000 per plant, the total value of the destroyed marijuana could reach $110 million. The largest was in Glenn County about 15 years ago, when agents took out 60,000 plants, state Department of Justice spokesman Mike Van Winkle. Ten men have been arrested as part of raids that began Sept. 8 after hunters reported seeing armed men in a marijuana garden. One man was arrested after allegedly hiding in the hills for two days. On Monday, 25 to 30 agents harvested the first 25,000 plants, which will be buried on U.S. Bureau of Land Management property. The agency administers the land where the marijuana was found. After the marijuana was first reported in the middle of August, law-enforcement agents said they saw armed men coming and going from the gardens. Part of the group appeared to remain in the area to tend the plants and guard against intruders. Some of the men who were arrested were carrying guns. September and October constitute the traditional harvest season for marijuana. Pubdate: September 15, 1999
