TEMECULA, Calif. Federal agents seized about 5,000 marijuana plants in a remote, mountainous area, but were unable to arrest whoever was tending the crop.
Drug Enforcement Agents swooped down Tuesday on the site from helicopters early in the morning and spent the day hauling away the marijuana, which had an estimated street value of more than $4 million, said agency spokesman Vince Rice. Each plant was between four feet and eight feet tall, he said. The drugs were found growing in the mountains in northeastern San Diego County, about 11 miles southeast of Temecula."It's an extremely, extremely remote area," Rice said. "It's so remote that they had to rappel in from helicopters to get there."Agents had the crop under surveillance for some time and had hoped to catch the growers during the early morning raid. But the area was deserted when the DEA arrived and no arrests were made, Rice said. Pubdate: September 14, 1999Copyright © The Sacramento Bee
