Feds: No Link Between Pot and Car Crashes

Washington, D.C. -- Marijuana use has not been found to increase the risk of car crashes, according to a new federal report. Studying car accidents in Virginia Beach, Va., during a 20-month period ending in 2012, researchers randomly sampled 3,000 accident-involved drivers and found no evidence suggesting those with marijuana in their system were more prone to accidents, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration report released Friday.
When researchers controlled for factors such as age and gender, they found no evidence marijuana use increases accident risks. This was despite the fact that, in the study, drivers who tested positive for marijuana use happened to be involved in more accidents. By comparison, the study found drivers with breath alcohol of .08 to be about four times more likely than sober drivers to be involved in accidents. Those nearly double the legal limit, at .15, were 12 times more likely to crash. The study is billed as the largest ever conducted to assess the relative crash risk of drivers who consume alcohol compared to pot.Officials contend more research must be conducted in the wake of recreational pot legalization in Colorado, Oregon, Alaska and Washington state. “Drivers should never get behind the wheel impaired, and we know that marijuana impairs judgment, reaction times and awareness,” NHTSA associate administrator for research and program development Jeff Michael said in a statement. “These findings highlight the importance of research to better understand how marijuana use affects drivers so states and communities can craft the best safety policies," Michael added. Correlation between pot use and crashes is of considerable interest as fewer people drive under the influence of alcohol and more drive under the influence of marijuana, according to another study released Friday by the NHTSA.That study found that the number of nighttime weekend drivers with marijuana in their system grew by 48 percent, from 8.6 percent in 2007 to 12.6 percent in 2013-2014. During the same period, the number of drivers with alcohol in their system dropped nearly a third.Source: Hill, The (US DC)Author: Jesse Byrnes Published: February 7, 2015Copyright: 2015 The HillContact: aleisele thehill.comWebsite: http://www.hillnews.com/URL: http://drugsense.org/url/tGNlsM1QCannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

Driving under the influence.
There is a big difference between drunk people and stoned people. Drunk people still think they can driver regardless of how drunk they get. Stoned people will know if they are too stoned to drive and would choose not to. I am sure there are still some that would attempt to driver when they are too stoned to do so, but I believe that the number would be much smaller than that of drunk people.

The assumed "We know (better)..."
“Drivers should never get behind the wheel impaired, and we know that marijuana impairs judgment, reaction times and awareness,” Its the old "We know (and you obviously do not) assumption. We are supposed to assume that we are in a greater danger from drivers under the influence because of the relegalization of Cannabis. Not true, not unless more people are drinking and driving.Keep studying! huge study result!
this is excellent, can be used to fight per-se laws at the state level. This echoes the Tashkin study on tobacco, which confirmed that cannabis does not cause lung cancer while tobacco came through as increased the risk by 20 times. just shows how warped our so-called "free country" has been all these years, demonizing the healthy and safe cannabis while pushing booze and tobacco. I truly believe they want us to get sick and go into the health care system for lots of expensive treatments. The feds and ruling elite have also enacted policies that increase sugar intake and diabetesÉ.do you see a pattern here???? Oncology is the most profitable business sector in health care.

Of course they did... and still do.
"Officials contend more research must be conducted..."They are so blown away when the research shows that they were wrong. They can't accept it. Those misled and unthinking followers of misled, misinformed, ignorant but zealous prohibitionists and ungodly government propaganda would now have to admit that they were wrong all along, and that they've actually been party to grievous injustices carried out against so many people. That's the part that freezes them to their spot. That's why they can't accept it. Too much comes back to look them in the face. They can't stand it.Many turned their own children or other family members and neighbors, over to the government prosecutors. They can't accept the truth because it is a glaring reflection of the true wrong. Theirs.

More proof, Cannabis is safer and relatively safe.
...they found no evidence marijuana use increases accident risks. ---when more people use cannabis, less people use booze...--- =less accidents...Oh happy day.-0-Officials contend more research must be conducted...They did, and additional / other research indicates deaths due to car accidents is down in Colorado since Colorado stopped caging responsible adults who choose to use cannabis.Through the years there have been many national and international studies which also indicate cannabis use doesn't create problems like booze. Some studies indicate some use of cannabis actually MAKES DRIVERS SAFER.It's reasonable to expect more studies will support all previous findings.-0-If a person lives in a state where cannabis is not yet RE-legalized and would like to see increased safety, please contact Your local politicians and tell them You want to RE-legalize the God-given plant cannabis.-Tell them You think it's time to stop caging responsible adults who choose to use the relatively safe God-given plant.
