USA -- Marijuana use appears to be a partisan affair according to a new Gallup poll, which finds that liberals and Democrats are more prone to use it than conservatives and Republicans.Almost half of liberals - 49 percent - report they have tried marijuana, compared to 40 percent of moderates and 32 percent of conservatives. Among all Americans, the rate is 38 percent who’ve tried it.
“Liberals (13 percent) have one of the highest rates of self-reported current usage of marijuana, exceeding both moderates (8 percent) and conservatives (2 percent),” Gallup reports.The only higher percentage of current use is among the young and restless, are 18-29.Among the numbers:38 percent of Americans say they have “tried” marijuana.65 percent of cigarette smokers and 32 percent of non-smokers say they have tried it.47 percent of men and 30 percent of women also say they have tried marijuana.31 percent of Republicans, 32 percent of conservatives, 41 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of liberals also say they have tried marijuana.7 percent of Americans overall say they currently smoke marijuana.10 percent of cigarette smokers and 6 percent of non-smokers currently smoke marijuana.8 percent of men and 6 percent of women also say they currently use marijuana.1 percent of Republicans, 2 percent of conservatives, 9 percent of Democrats and 13 percent of liberals also say they have tried marijuana.Source: A Gallup poll of 2,027 U.S. adults conducted July 10-14 and released Friday.Source: Washington Times (DC)Author: Jennifer Harper, The Washington TimesPublished: August 5, 2013Copyright: 2013 The Washington Times, LLC Website: http://www.washtimes.com/Contact: letters washingtontimes.com URL: http://drugsense.org/url/W0ATOmDUCannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

corrigendum
Time was running out on ye olde liebrewery computer, my last lines should read:* "get 800,000 kids a year hooked on H-ot B-urning O-verdose M-onoxide $igarettes"* "435,000 deaths/year reflecting an over-1,000,000/year recruitment rate 3 decades ago"

 Swazi, I agree in part, but...
Over last decade the ratio was almost 2-1, i.e. Reps got over 60% of the campaign money. Also Rep voter base is 20 %-points more anti-cannabis-legalization than Dem. Please let's not get too flippant or careless about identifying the enemy.Oh dammit please don't smear tobasco, it aint so bad in moderation.Let me paraphrase: a great deal of money is spent to keep you and me ignorant when corporate oligopolies have a deep need for us to spend our money stupidly. Keeping American children ignorant of how to use marijuana wisely and moderately protects the Empire's Bizness as Usual Right to get over 800,000 kids a year hooked on nicotine $igarettes. 40% of addicts die prematurely (yielding today's published aestimate of $435,000 deaths year relecting a 1,000,000-per-year recruitment rate 3 decades ago.

Democrats=Republicans
mexweed - I make no claims about Reps or Dems being better or worse than the other. Both parties are bought and paid for, and whichever clueless shlub gets the nomination and/or Presidency makes no difference - they're both beholding to their masters, the owners of our government - and will promise us the moon to get elected, then blow off every stinking promise from the campaign trail to concentrate on what those who paid for their election want.As for Republicans (or Democrats for that matter) really believing what Big Tobasco says, I think Saul Bellow said it best:"A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep."It's much easier to believe lies when they're wrapped in $100 dollar bills. It's the typical "I gots mine Jack" mentality that makes a career accepting lobbyist's bribes decade after decade in opposition to the well being and safety of the citizens of the U.S. so easy to slide into. It's what's rotting our society from the top down.

check misprint; also, a political thought or two
The last two short paragraphs seem to contain a misprint ("8 percent of men...", "1 percent of Republicans... say they have tried marijuana.") Maybe those figures apply to "currently use" as further above?There's an interesting paradox: "65 percent of cigarette smokers and 32 percent of non-smokers say they have tried it." And "10 percent of cigarette smokers and 6 percent of non-smokers currently smoke marijuana."Yet Republicans, which are far more opposed to cannabis than Democrats, receive much more campaign money from the cigarette industry.I disagree with Swazi-X and Sam on the point of looking for hypocrisy among Republicans-- rather the problem is that so many of them really believe what Big 2WackGo wants them to believe about cannabis rather than have any knowledge based on personal research.Concerning the Republican link with tobacco-- you'd think a "conservative" would care about conserving human life. Maybe it's up to us to remind them that 40% of all kids who get hooked on tobacco cigarettes will die prematurely (and cost a mountain of medical dollars)-- and that early-life access to cannabis instead could save millions of lives worldwide (oops, don't touch that, that's the third rail).

Uruguay Entering Brave New World
High Times in Montevideo: Uruguay Entering Brave New World of Pot LegalizationAugust 5, 2013Freddy gets on his knees and points excitedly at the bright green sprout growing discreetly in the shade under a bench in the middle of Sarandí Street, the exclusive pedestrian walkway lined with art galleries and expensive shops in the old colonial sector of Montevideo. “That’s my baby,” he says, smiling broadly behind his dark glasses and crinkly beard at the sight of the tiny marijuana plant raising its fronds between the cobblestones, unnoticed by the hundreds of tourists strolling past.Sitting behind his stall on the downtown tourist walk on a cold southern-hemispheric winter’s day, Freddy sells ornate cannabis pipes that he carves out of swordfish bone and wood to passers-by. “I like to grow my own marijuana for my own use, but when the police catch me with it I have to lie and say it dropped into my hands from a palm tree,” he says, laughing.Soon, Freddy and all other marijuana smokers in Uruguay won’t have to lie or hide any longer. Uruguay is about to become the first country in the world to fully legalize the production and sale of marijuana, after a decadelong grassroots movement headed by mostly middle-class consumers finally won the day in what is an atypically liberal South American nation.Complete Article: http://drugsense.org/url/eo7LCKRc

actual users
If you were to look at politicians in this country who have been busted with cannabis I would say the Republicans have a huge lead on the Dems, at least in the northeast.

Other Demographics?
How many currently employed police use cannabis? How about judges sitting on the bench, prosecutors, jailers?I'd like to know how many and which politicians currently use cannabis - by name, not just political party.Once again, the wrong question was asked and answered - another bright, shiny object dangled in the public's face to keep us all distracted from the real question; which of those we employ are using cannabis while working against letting anyone use it? Which politicians can't pass a piss test? Which lawyers, cops, federal prosecutors, judges, etc.?That's the question they don't want us little people to ask.cannabisevangelist.com - Eat Fresh Cannabis!

No Surprise
Liberals tend to think outside the box.
