Colorado Set To Legalize Marijuana PPP Survey Says
Posted by CN Staff on November 05, 2012 at 18:19:27 PT

Source: Huffington Post
Colorado -- With just hours before polling places open for Election Day, advocates for the legalization of marijuana in Colorado got some good news from Public Policy Polling about the popularity of Amendment 64, a ballot measure which seeks to regulate marijuana like alcohol, on Monday.According to PPP, 52 percent of voters support Amendment 64 while only 44 percent are opposed to the measure leaving the state "set to legalize marijuana tomorrow," PPP's Tom Jensen writes about the results of their latest survey.
PPP also found that of the 1,096 likely Colorado voters, 56 percent favored the legalization of marijuana in general, while only 39 percent said the drug should remain illegal. This is the highest percentage of support that PPP has found since they began surveying the issue of marijuana legalization. Back in September, PPP found 47 percent in favor of A64 and 38 percent against with 49 percent in favor of marijuana being legal, in general. The highest support ever polled was from a June Rasmussen survey of 500 likely Colorado voters which showed 61 percent were in favor of legalizing marijuana if it is regulated the way that alcohol and cigarettes are currently regulated.Voters in Colorado, Oregon and Washington are all considering measures that would effectively end marijuana prohibition in their respective states. Marijuana legalization has become an issue that defies the stereotypes of party lines, garnering the support of key progressives and conservatives in Colorado, Washington and Oregon. And although all three states have pot initiatives on their ballots, Colorado and Washington's pot ballot measures appear to be quite popular with voters, according to recent polling. If marijuana is legalized in Colorado under Amendment 64 it would be taxed and regulated similar to alcohol and tobacco. It would give state and local governments the ability to control and tax the sale of small amounts of marijuana to adults age 21 and older. According to the Associated Press, analysts project that that tax revenue could generate somewhere between $5 million and $22 million a year in the state. An economist whose study was funded by a pro-pot group projects as much as a $60 million boost by 2017.However, the big unknown still is if the federal government would allow a regulated marijuana market to take shape. Attorney General Eric Holder, who was a vocal opponent of California's legalization initiative in 2010 saying he would "vigorously enforce" federal marijuana prohibition, has continued to remain silent on the issue this year.In September, Holder was urged by by nine former heads of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to take a stand against marijuana legalization again. "To continue to remain silent conveys to the American public and the global community a tacit acceptance of these dangerous initiatives," the nine said in the letter to holder obtained by Reuters.Earlier this month those same DEA drug warriors joined by former directors of the Office of National Drug Control Policy on a teleconference call to put additional pressure on Holder to speak out against Colorado's marijuana measure as well as similar initiatives on the ballot in Washington state and Oregon. The drug warriors say that states that legalize marijuana for recreational use will trigger a "Constitutional showdown" with the federal government. In a report published Sunday by NBC News, President Obama's former senior drug policy advisor said that if the marijuana initiatives pass, a war will be incited between the federal government and the states that pass them. "Once these sates actually try to implement these laws, we will sen an effort by the feds to shut it down," Sabet said. But proponents of the legislation say they don't foresee federal agents interfering in states that have legalized cannabis, citing the federal government's silence on the issue this election cycle. With Election Day less than 24 hours away, the DOJ has yet to formally announce its enforcement intentions regarding the ballot measures that, if passed, could end marijuana prohibition in each state. The clearest statement from the DOJ came from Deputy Attorney General James Cole, who said his office's stance on the issue would be "the same as it's always been." During a recent appearance on "60 Minutes" Cole elaborated, "We're going to take a look at whether or not there are dangers to the community from the sale of marijuana and we're going to go after those dangers," Reuters reported.Source: Huffington Post (NY)Author: Matt FernerPublished: November 5, 2012Copyright: 2012 HuffingtonPost.com, LLC Contact: scoop huffingtonpost.comWebsite: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/URL: http://drugsense.org/url/a1p1vuaoCannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

You're welcome. We are moving forward in leaps and bounds now. I don't know how many hurdles we will have to jump but we will win this race eventually. I hope when they buck up against us people don't go orbital because that bothers me. We don't always get what we want but we do get what we need.

Thank you, FoM
It's thanks to you that I've had a platform to speak for over a decade. We are all a part of history. Our story hasn't changed for the 35 years I've been fighting for the truth. I certainly can't say that for our opponents who grasp onto every lie they can find. Just like Mitt Romney, every day brings another lie.It bears repeating, our story is the same now as it was in the 1970's. We've known the truth, we've stuck with the truth and the truth will eventually set us free.Bud

Here comes the fight
Marijuana legalization victories could be short-livedhttp://www.reuters.com/article/2012/11/08/us-usa-marijuana-votes-idUSBRE8A705E20121108(Reuters) - Votes making Colorado and Washington the first U.S. states to legalize marijuana for recreational use could be short-lived victories for pot backers because the federal government will fight them, two former U.S. drug control officials said on Wednesday. They said the federal government could sue to block parts of the measures or send threatening letters to marijuana shops, followed up by street-level clampdowns similar to those targeting medical marijuana dispensaries the government suspects are fronts for drug traffickers."This is a symbolic victory for (legalization) advocates, but it will be short-lived," Kevin Sabet, a former adviser to the Obama administration's drug czar, told reporters.[SNIPPED]Let me remind everybody that even people inside the Obama administration said Obama was going to use the Justice Department to defend DOMA, the so-called Defense Of Marriage Act. Obama refused.I don't give a two-bit former drug official any credibility because there's probably a good reason they have the qualifier "former" attached to their title. Obama is now, not the former, and he now has the voice of the people backing him up to do what's right. He is way too smart to attack the majority of the population of two blue states who support him on almost everything else he stands for.I knew beyond anything that George W. Bush was going to commit war crimes when he announced long before 9/11/01 that we would no longer be participating in the World Court system in The Hague. He went as far as threatening the invasion of the Netherlands to free any US citizen held there for trial.I was right.I knew beyond anything driving around back in the mid-2000's that there was no way in the world people could really afford to live in all of these expensive houses popping up everywhere. I use to remark to Mrs. Green all the time about how we were going to see the housing market and entire economy collapse.Again, I was right.I've known a lot of things beforehand that I've been proven right. I'll admit, I never saw Bush being reelected in 2004 but neither did anybody else in the entire world except the now proven idiotic jackasses who voted for him.I say all of that to preface my prediction for the future of cannabis. With every bit of sureness that I had with all of my former prognostications, I believe there's no way Obama and the Democratic party are going to launch into a four year war with the people who overwhelmingly support them and whose support is vitally needed to keep the country moving forward.Obama worked his butt off trying to get the support of the 24 states who voted against him. He also learned that he couldn't get their support if he did anything other than kill himself or quit. Those backwards people who gave us the civil war in order to keep slavery alive are almost exclusively the states filled with the haters who would never support cannabis legalization. See any relationship?
It doesn't matter if he pisses off the southern haters anymore. They are going to hate every Democratic candidate no matter what.Obama knows that. That's why millions of LGBT citizens are achieving the rights and freedoms they've fought for since long before we ever had to start fighting for ours. The haters are outnumbered and dying off.The Obama administration will NOT sue to stop the will of the voters. If they do then this is the last time for a long time that they will have any majorities in this government. The Reverend Bud Green

I turn 50 next week
I have never in my life voted for and liked a president as much as I do Barrack Obama. I don't say it much because people want to kill me for my beliefs but I feel it. Do I like everything he's done? Hell no! I don't even like everything I've done in the past four years but I did things out of love and with a tremendous amount of intelligence and I did a better job than a lot of if not most folks.Listen to me carefully ... If Obama would have dealt with the issue of cannabis the way he will this term we would be crying right now over President Romney! Obama would have been defeated and everything would have been set back to 1962 like I had just been born. The only difference is we'll never again have the chance to go forward. We'll just continue to move backwards until the country is bankrupted by the rich and exists no more. The Reverend Bud Green

The South will think, again!A little bittersweet for the Gary Johnson gang, and it would of been nice to have a President that was with us rather than agin us, but I guess we can't have everything all at once. However, now we'll get to see if this 2nd term really does give us that old black magic that I loved so well in 2008....

tonight's victories
This was a good night for the continuing end to the insane laws against cannabis. From the first battles for medical cannabis in California many years ago, to the victories tonight, there are a lot of people we owe a huge debt of gratitude.Mason Tvert has the same belief that I always promoted here. The way to the end the war against a beneficial and harmless plant is through first regulating it like alcohol. The tie in to the cultivation of hemp is a great bonus. Now in one state you have all of three of the main arguments in favor of legal cannabis...........Medical......Recreational.......and Industrial.Whether Obama was supportive or not, the passage of the Colorado amendment happened. Our movement will not be stopped now. Sanity is slowly seeping in to the majority......................I was disappointed by a few of the actions Obama took during his first term. Overall, except for how he treated our issue, I was fairly satisfied with his presidency. He did a lot of good things, considering what he had to work with in the rest of the Washington machine.Although I live in a rabid red state, I still cast my vote for blue.Legal like alcohol. One down.......forty nine to go.

An Adult,
HEMP is the BIG winner. For the most part, people who wish to smoke cannabis already do so.Wierd: The ignoids should have come out and said; legalizing marijuana is simply a foothold / back door attempt to grow HEMP. -Look at the list of wealthy investers who stand to lose out once hemp s grown and products are produced everwhere in America. Everything made with petrolium, every paper product on and on. And that all requires factories nearby. EXported jobs to Asian countries will come back to America.????.As I'm sure You know... And check it out. All those freakin farmland counties which voted against cannabis .... those farmers may be too brainwashed, ignorant and afraid to grow hemp. The devil weed. But if they grow it and put their hemp seeds in My local health food store, I'll buy them. If they don't Canada will continue to take My money....-from them. Cause it's already being sold at Natural Grocers and probably every other health food store in America.

The Electoral College is still Constitutional
The founding fathers were a bunch of old white men who were slave owners and only gave voting rights to white men who owned property. They also gave us the Electoral College. It's only gone against the popular vote four times so it's debatable whether it's worthy of a debate.I would argue that we need to do a whole helluva lot better at making voting fair for everybody before we start removing some of our safeguards. The Reverend Bud Green

On a popular vote I look at it this way. If a person was running for an office they would only cater to heavily populated areas. That would mean rural folks would never have a say in any political decisions and then only city folks would count.

I think it is.It's been pretty obvious all along, but when I read what Sam wrote... it hit me hard. Rich against poor and middle class. Unoppressed against the oppressed. And nobody's explained it to me yet... is it true that California isn't having a legalization vote? How did that happen?

You're right. But still, I don't like it. I'd rather it be about the individual vote counting. But you're right... if it's about the states and such, but I'm not at all it should be. Or about rural or city stuff. I still think to be fair to the individual and make his vote matter, it should be the popular vote. I guess there is a point to it... but I don't especially want to grasp it. (lip sticking out... as in pouting.)

Yep, could be historic 2nite...
I went Johnson myself but ALMOST voted for Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party candidate. I don't like how Johnson would cut the corporate tax but you can't win em all. It's more so they get 5% of the vote, the Libertarians. I'd love to see one elected some day. Well, as far as the Colorado legalize ballot question goes, it looks like it might pass. Finally: PROGRESS. Oregon is looking good too, we'll see. Gotta give Mason Tavert his dues....Let freedom reign baby!

The problem with getting rid of the electoral vote is lots of the red states would never get a chance to have a republican win. Texas is a big state but most of the red states are not very big. I hope this makes sense. California, New York and other heavily populated states would determine who would become President.

FoM... I understand...
You SHOULD vote for Obama. I'm hearing Texans grousing about the Ohio vote. Many people are saying that Ohio will be the deciding state and it makes a lot of people mad that a lot of our votes don't amount to a hill of beans because of the Electoral College. But your state is up in the air. No Electoral College vote decided on yet. Here there is no contest, as I understand it, and my vote for Johnson can't possibly hurt Obama. And I am happy to get to vote for Johnson.I love me some Gary Johnson... but I hope Obama wins, since it's not likely that Johnson can. I don't trust the Republicans. I'm afraid they'll do another Bush type thing and make Romney "King" without the approval of the people. :0(And our issue? Maybe Romney and his minions can slow us down... but they can't stop us. We're rolling. We are a juggernaut ourselves now. A force to be reckoned with. We are winning. Our time has come. Maybe they'll still be arresting people and maybe even killing them for a while to come yet... but eventually we will stop them, because we are right.

Wow, Colorado passing would be incredible! I just explained to my friend in Denver what might happen. He said, I'd love to grow my own, but I've got kids. I said, so what? It's going to be legal. He said "without a card?". His mind is still stretching to comprehend what is going to happen.Yes, no John Walters this year, wonderful, if nothing else lobbying against this has become career-harming activity.

I hope he wins, too, FoM.
As opposed to Romney for sure!I am grateful for the stepping up the government has done for our veterans. Very much.I think Romney is an arrogant, spoiled, hateful, judgmental, selfish full grown brat and I hope we don't have to have him for President. But if he should win, we still have our God who reigns over all... the good and the bad.I didn't vote for Obama... and I am mad at him for laughing at us, but I'd rather he win than Romney. In this state Romney will win. I'm sure. I am very thankful to have voted for my man, Gary Johnson, even though I don't think he can win... but very much... I hope he makes a good showing. And speaking of Romney taking Texas... I despise the Electoral College, too, BGreen. It should have been gotten rid of the minute the telegraph system went up. It's unnecessary and something that could be used by corruption and probably often is. I don't like it. We do not need the Electoral College any longer and haven't in a very, very long time, so I don't know why we still have it, unless it really is to facilitate corruption. It's like the horse and carriage... it should be a relic of the past. Necessary then... but not now.

I can't begin to thank Obama enough for helping the Veterans like he has. I have watched all of it evolve and the happiness it has brought to so many Vietnam Veterans. This wouldn't have happened under McCain. How could I possibly vote for anyone else? Our issue is beyond going backwards under Obama. It could go backwards under Romney though.

Yes, dreams do come true. Mrs. Green and I voted absentee last week so we don't have to mess with the lines today. There's a possibility that Todd "legitimate rape" Akins could become my senator today. He's the craziest of the craziest republican because he actually says what he really thinks. The successful republicans think EXACTLY like Todd Akins but they know better than to ever tell the truth about anything, especially when it comes to policy, religion, sports, science, the weather or anything else.Every word coming out of Mitt Romney's and most every other republican's mouth is a damned lie, including and, is, or and of, and especially I.The Reverend Bud Green

Let the people speak loud and proud in these courageous states. Let the future begin with dignity and truth. Enough with the lies, bullying and theft. It just goes to show us all that dreams do come true. I don't know the outcome of today but from when we started CNews in 1998 we have made enormous progress with more to come. If we can get legalization as the focus medical marijuana will work out too. People who put money in medical marijuana shops will not be happy but they has their time in the sun.

Happy Voting Day!
I hope that everyone will be happy with the outcome of the election tonight. Today is a very important day. The direction of our country is at stake. Our issue could turn strongly in our favor because the Federal and State government will have to face the situation if we win. It will not be able to be ignored. From the bottom up is how we were told to do it so we did. Good luck everyone! May all our wishes this day come true.
