THE Anglican Communion's future was thrown into doubt yesterday when the Archbishop of South East Asia declared he would boycott a meeting in the "most heretical province" of Scotland.
Archbishop Moses Tay, the Bishop of Singapore, wrote to the Archbishop of Canterbury describing his "hurt and distress" at the book Godless Morality, by the Primus of Scotland, the Most Rev Richard Holloway. Describing it as "horrendous and heretical", Archbishop Tay claimed the book undermined the teachings of the Church and "deviates from the faith".Bishop Holloway, a supporter of the homosexual rights lobby, writes about lesbians, "shagging" among teenagers and his own experiment with cannabis smoking in his latest book. He calls for a Royal Commission to consider legalising cannabis and argues for the ordination of practising homosexuals.Traditionalists in the Episcopal Church of Scotland, of which Archbishop Holloway is primus, have called for his resignation, claiming his views on homosexuality contradict Biblical teachings. Bishop Holloway insisted this week that he would not resign, claiming he had wide support for his views on "an inclusive Church". In protest at the book and Dr George Carey's refusal to discipline the Primus, the Singaporean bishop said he would boycott a top-level meeting of the Anglican Consultative Council in Dundee next month. In a letter which has been copied to all the primates of the Anglican Communion, Archbishop Tay, 61, said: "We need to face up to the deep divisions within our Communion because of the continuing deviation from 'the faith once delivered to the saints'. We cannot value unity above truth, which is intolerant of error. Any facade of unity is no more than the invisible clothes worn by the Emperor." A spokesman for the Archbishop of Canterbury said the letter was "awaiting Dr Carey's attention" on his return this Sunday from a holiday in America.Wednesday 1 September 1999Cannabis No More Harmful Than Alcohol - 8/19/99http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread2556.shtml
