SAINT JOHN, N.B. (CP) -- Decision has been reserved in the case of a New Brunswick man who claims his marijuana use is for medical purposes.
Jim Wood of Cambridge Narrows is trying to get charges of cultivating marijuana and trafficking in the drug dropped. He suffers from chronic back pain and claims the drug eases the discomfort. In August 1998, the Mounties seized 57 plants at his home. A drug expert testified at a court hearing Tuesday that nobody needs that many plants for personal use and the only reasonable explanation was that they were meant for sale. RCMP Const. Mark Gorbet said 12 plants would have been enough for personal use. Wood's lawyer is asking, at the very least, the judge to set aside the charges until the federal health minister rules on whether mairjuana can be used for medical reasons. The judge will decide on the application Oct. 5. Pubdate: August 31, 1999
