In the magic Year 2000, Al Lewis will be 90 years old and sitting in the U.S. Senate, if the voters of New York State have any cool. It could happen!
With competitors like Rudy Giuliani and Hilary Clinton, a vote for Grandpa Munster will be a vote for life itself! Last year, Al Lewis collected 50,000 votes across New York State, running for Governor on the Green Party ticket. He would have gotten loads more votes if the Greens had been allowed to bill him on the ballot as 'Grandpa Al,' his instantly-recognizable sobriquet from the 'Munsters' TV show of 1960-65. As it was, Grandpa Al did so well at the polls that the Greens earned a permanent slot on all New York State ballots until 2002, without the expensive hassle of petitioning for each candidate. Now Al Lewis is polishing off his first century--he was born in 1910--in his lifelong maverick style, troubling the councils of the wise. Besides campaigning throughout New York State in his trademark sandals, white socks and baseball cap, Al with his wife Karen visits prisons everywhere, and they stand vigils regularly for victims of the state's insane Rockefeller drug laws. And Nelson Rockefeller was a FRIEND of Al's!HIGH TIMES' Toby Rogers lured Al Lewis into the historic Oyster Bar below Grand Central Station recently for an interview about his century, through which Al Lewis has been more ubiquitous than Forrest Gump--and with razor-sharp intelligence, and infinite compassion. The chat moved quickly from politics to autobiography to philosophy. Enjoy!Click the link to read the complete article.Pubdate: August 25, 1999http://www.hightimes.com/ht/new/9908/grandpa.html
