LAKE ARROWHEAD, Calif. (AP) -- Law enforcement agents have seized $80 million worth of marijuana -- 23,000 plants -- in a remote section of the San Bernardino National Forest, officials said.
Sheriff's deputies and state and federal agents raided a four-acre plantation near Lake Arrowhead on Tuesday, but failed to make any arrests, sheriff's spokesman Chip Patterson said Thursday. ``It's by far the largest growing operation we've ever seen in terms of sheer numbers. It took a couple dozen deputies two days to cut down all the plants,'' he said. The plantation, hidden by heavy brush and inaccessible by road, was discovered several weeks ago by deputies patrolling the area by helicopter. Because of the size of the plants -- from 4 feet to 13 feet -- the plantation was believed to have been in operation for up to three years, he said. After two weeks of surveillance, deputies and others seized the plants, hoping also to capture six to eight men believed to have been living in tents and harvesting the crop. ``We think the suspects fled shortly before we arrived. They may have heard us coming,'' Patterson said. Because of the remoteness of the location, law enforcement officials had to be airlifted into the area by helicopter. Deputies estimated the growers had harvested and sold as much as $30 million before the plantation, estimated to be worth $80 million, was seized, Patterson said. Investigators believe the growers were hiking the marijuana out of park. Thursday, August 26, 1999
