GARY - Police harvested a healthy crop of marijuana flourishing amid scrub bush and wildflowers on city-owned property Wednesday morning.
Police Chief John Roby said about 300 pounds of plants was pulled from a drainage field west of the Gary Sanitary District plant on the city's west side.Roby estimated the street value at about $200,000."We didn't go through it all, but some of those stalks would be worth $2,000," Roby said.Roby, Deputy Chief Thomas Papadakis, the department's area commanders and members of the Public Morals Division traded their normal togs for overalls and work gloves to yank the weeds growing in a five-acre area along the Grand Calumet River. Some of the plants were in an open area, more were growing under the Indiana Toll Road.As the project began, those unfamiliar with the plant needed a little help."Is this it?" asked Papadakis, holding up a handful of seed-laden stems."No," said Commander Chris Rogers, pointing at nearby plants. "It's this."In no time, the officers learned to quickly identify the offending plants and remove them. The marijuana was tied in bundles and dumped in a pickup. Police took the pot to an undisclosed location and burned it Wednesday afternoon, Roby said. The plants are probably the product of seeds flushed down area toilets, often when police conduct raids at drug houses, Roby said. As the treatment facility processes waste, seeds end up in the nearby field where they sprout. The plants were first noticed by security officers for the Gary Sanitary District, who contacted the mayor and police chief for assistance, Roby said Pubdate: August 26, 1999
