Florida Man Convicted of Marijuana Trafficking, Reports U.S. AttorneyUnited States Attorney Donald K. Stern, George C. Festa, Special Agent in Charge of the New England Field Division of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, and Frederick Aufiero, Chief of the Criminal Investigation Division of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service announced that ROBERT H. GRUBB, age 47, currently residing in Naples, Florida pled guilty yesterday to a federal indictment charging him with conspiracy to distribute marijuana. The change of plea took place before U.S. District Judge Richard G. Stearns. GRUBB was among 12 defendants charged in a federal indictment with participating in a conspiracy to distribute marijuana in the 1980s and the 1990s. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael J. Pelgro stated in court that the conspiracy was headed by co-defendant [name redacted] of Newton and that, during the life of the conspiracy, substantial quantities of marijuana were obtained from different sources in Texas and Arizona and then transported to Massachusetts for sale to numerous customers. The conspiracy was operating until December 1993 when federal, state, and local law enforcement authorities executed a search warrant at [name redacted]'s home on Woodland Road in Newton and recovered quantities of cocaine, LSD, hashish, and marijuana. [name redacted] pled guilty earlier this year and was sentenced by Judge Stearns to 10 years in federal prison. His Newton home, a vacation home in Rindge, New Hampshire, and several other assets were forfeited to the federal government. GRUBB was identified in court as an acquaintance of [name redacted] who resided in Tucson, Arizona during the late 1980s and the early 1990s. GRUBB joined the conspiracy in that time frame by finding marijuana sources of supply in Tucson for the [name redacted] organization. Through his connections, GRUBB was able to put [name redacted] in contact with Mexican smugglers and was able to arrange for [name redacted] to purchase loads of marijuana from the smugglers. GRUBB also rented a townhouse condominium in Tucson for [name redacted] to use when he traveled to Tucson to purchase loads of marijuana. On at least one occasion, GRUBB and another drove a load of marijuana cross-country from Tucson to [name redacted]'s home in Newton. The government's evidence established that loads of marijuana were frequently stored at the [name redacted] home and then broken up and re-packaged for sale by [name redacted] and several other defendants. Judge Stearns scheduled sentencing for April 7, 1999. Grubb faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in federal prison without parole, to be followed by a term of supervised release of at least 3 years, and a fine of up to $1,000,000. GRUBB is the eighth defendant to plead guilty in this case. Three other defendants are scheduled to plead guilty before Judge Stearns later this year and one defendant is scheduled to plead guilty in Tucson later this year. This case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Criminal Investigation Division of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, in cooperation with the Newton Police Department. It is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael J. Pelgro of Stern's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force and Shelbey Wright of Stern's Asset Forfeiture Unit.
