Hello Friends and Compatriots:I am honored to have received your gratitude for my work for the past year and a half. I have literally received hundreds of letters of support and gifts along my journey for freedom for all Americans, not just for those who obey the law's strict and uncompassionate hand.
I cannot write all of you individually as I had been due to the influx of innumerable letters. I do thank you for all the support and I guarantee you that I read all of your words. It is fantastic to know that you care so much and are with me when I feel pushed down by law enforcement and the opinions of those who are insecure with their own thoughts about the way the world "should be." Protesting and going to court so much has taught me a lot about the system and most of all, myself. Before I started protesting and even before I was busted the first time, I was unaware that the Drug War was a real entity that could touch my life or invade my privacy. After my first bust, I was depressed for a long time because I did not take action. I kept thinking, "Poor me, why me?" It was not until I decided to take action that those feelings of despair faded away and grew into strength. I cannot tell you the joy I feel knowing that because I had decided to leave fear behind for a greater cause, I had grown into a person who contributes to this world of today and of many more tomorrows. At first I was satisfied that I wrote letters to my senators and president but after so many form letters basically saying , "We understand how you feel and thank you for your letter but we really don't care," I understood that another course of action was needed. People needed to see a young woman who was not the pseudo-90's excuse for a hippy (not that there's anything wrong with Hippies, I love them very much) and not someone who was out there "just to get high," but a person who was intelligent, compassionate and looked like someone they might know telling them that I knew the truth about marijuana. I have fought long battles with heads of Pennsylvania State University and State College Borough Council alongside my dear friend and collegue Dr. Julian Heicklen and we have, for the most part, come out winners. Recently, I have moved to Bucks County, PA--fours hours away from State College, PA and am beginning a new life here. I live with my boyfriend's parents and they have asked me to put on hold my outward protesting activities beause this puts them at risk. I very well understand that and because I have done so much activism in such a short amount of time, I need at least a six month-one year break lest I burn myself out. I also need money too so I have to settle in and work for awhile. I will continue my web work and research and occasional writing for HIGH TIMES as a freelance journalist and attending rallies for speaking engagements. For those of you asking what you can do for the movement, I suggest not hiding. Too many people write to me thanking me and saying what we need is more people like myself. YOU ARE THOSE PEOPLE. The only difference between all of you and me is that I decided I wasn't going to get pushed around anymore. I know all of you have it in you and like I said before there is no better feeling than knowing your actions helped change the world. Sure, you may be shunned, you may even lose your job but what you will retain is your DIGNITY. And that, my friends is the essence of LIFE. Medical patients that have written me: If you would like to take action, I suggest you contact Marijuana Policy Project, a medical advocacy group in D.C. that helps patients get exposure in their congressman's offices by eating or smoking marijuana and they have never been prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Their email is: MPP MPP.ORGTell them I sent you and that you are ready to be an American. Ask what you can do for your country and moreover, the world. I thank all of you again for your time and love sent via email. Your letters have helped limit my days under great duress. I do not want you to look up to me, however. I want you to join me. Your friend and compatriot always, Diane R.
