NORTHWOOD - A Northwood man's household goods were sold at auction on Saturday to raise money to pay taxes due on marijuana plants found growing at his home.
The sale was the latest chapter in a drug case involving Marvin Thorson, said Chad Belville, Worth County attorney. Thorson, 43, was charged with delivery of controlled substance in January, Belville said. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 10 years in prison on May 17. During a search of Thorson's residence, nearly two dozen marijuana plants were discovered growing, Belville said. The Iowa Department of Revenue assesses each plant at about $750. At this point, there is over $30,000 due in taxes with penalties and interest, Belville said. Thorson "was unable to pay his taxes on that so the Department of Revenue seized everything he had, absolutely everything," Belville said. "Today, all of his personal belongings were sold at auction and we raised a little over $8,000 to pay his taxes." Furniture, tools, household appliances and multiple cars were all sold, Belville said. Only photographs and clothing were allowed to remain. "If he would have owned his home, we would have taken that, too," Belville said. Thorson, who was also sentenced to serve up to 10 years in prison on an unrelated charge, will be expected to serve more than 10 years before being paroled, Belville said. "Those taxes add up quickly and the penalties add up," Belville said. "That is entirely independent of criminal charges."Globe-GazetteSunday, August 22, 1999

Is grass worse than booze?
I wonder if Mr. Belville supports taking all of someone's assetts for crimes like, ... oh I don't know, let's say, second offense Operating while under the Influence?
