Los Angeles -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein, California's senior U.S. senator, has lent her support to the campaign to defeat Proposition 19, the marijuana legalization measure on the state's November ballot.The prominent Democrat, first elected to the Senate in 1992, signed the ballot argument against the initiative. On Monday, she issued a statement through the opposition campaign calling the measure "a jumbled legal nightmare that will make our highways, our workplaces and our communities less safe."
Roger Salazar, spokesman for Public Safety First, said the opposition committee sought Feinstein's support."She's one of the most respected figures in California," he said. "She has a great history with law enforcement and dealing with this type of issue. We're looking at a bipartisan effort."Proposition 19 would allow adults 21 and older to possess, grow and transport marijuana, and would allow cities and counties to regulate and tax commercial sales. Most of the state's top elected officials and candidates for statewide office — from both major parties — are against the initiative.Dale Sky Clare, a spokeswoman for Tax Cannabis 2010, the committee behind the measure, said it was not surprising that Feinstein and other statewide politicians opposed it."I'm just not putting a lot of faith in politicians to lead," she said. "The voters have always led on this issue."Both campaigns have been collecting endorsements and touting them on their websites.The recent unusual endorsement of the measure by the state NAACP led to the first real debate in the campaign. The NAACP saw it as a civil rights issue, noting that enforcement of marijuana laws disproportionately affects African Americans. The endorsement infuriated a group of black ministers who have organized to fight the initiative and who believe it will lead to more crime and addiction.The pro-legalization ballot argument was signed by several former law enforcement officials, including retired Orange County Superior Court Judge James P. Gray and retired San Jose Police Chief Joseph D. McNamara. I'm not surprised. She's always seemed a typical wealthy corporate shill to me. Nothing very human or warm about her. And she's obviously quite pleased with herself and always has been about being that way, it's seemed to me.

I just checked and mine is Windows XP SP3 (Service Pack 3) too. It's due to those automatic updates that are recommended.The article comes from a vendor source newletter, and is a warning to those who do not keep their updates up-to-date.Anybody here who is using SP2 and doesn't have automatic updates, check your system.

Please consider that Mrs. Feinstein has supported MMJ before. She's even testified in front of Congress on behalf of the health-related issue of MMJ, of aiding sick people at getting their meds without prosecution.Her decision may actually be a bad decision in that she could attract voters in CA with support for the measure. Her decision assumes that voters will see more centrist qualities in her, helping her win. It could have the opposite effect.Diane Feinstein is a "liberal" and has been pockmarked as one by many Repubs. But she was against MJ legalization. The notion "dope smoking liberal" is actually an anomaly: one must adhere to the law to actually be called "liberal" or "conservative," according to political theory. People who use "drugs" borrow from left and right philosophies without any truly idealist focus. Or is this even true?--rchandar

The problem seemed to be that the 'slanted double quotes' is not a standard ASCII character, but an extended ASCII character that resembles character 253 on a Mac:http://www.4d.com/docs/CMU/CMU10119.HTM(though with my eyesight, I'd need a much larger monitor to tell for sure).Anyway, the hiccup seems to be with the html source of the Bill of Rights, that's where the slanted quotes are. Evidently some font sets are unable to display certain extended ASCII characters correctly.

She did support MMJ; still, she's a proud centrist and our measure sounded exceptional to her.We do not gain anything by backing the Republican who's running against her this year. It's better to build coalitions from the ground up, and work with senators--who aren't in our neck of the woods all that often and who represent the state Federally--last.

It worked for me using Firefox 3.6.6 with Times Roman 16 font. Switching to MS Sans-Serif makes all quotes on the page appear as solid rectangles... strange.

the industry
The industry in California has gotten so large now that it really doesn’t matter what the Senator thinks. The industry has too much of an impact on the whole state economy to not deal with it in a reasonable way. It is there, and it is going to be there legal or not. The only way to deal with it is to legalize it and make the most of it. Prohibition is not dealing with it. Prohibition is not facing reality. (Did everybody like the not facing reality line? It goes way back.) A legal cannabis industry would be a good thing.

I use Firefox 3.6.6. and I have never noticed anything like what you are describing with the fonts, not even in konagold's post here. Have you tried adjusting the "font and colors" under the "content" tab in the Firefox options menu? I still have mine set to the defaults (Times New Roman in 16 point font) and that is how it appears to me on CNews, but you can also use the advanced menu to override a website's font settings (although I have never adjusted these from the defaults). I am using firefox and I haven't had any problems.You could try opera or google chrome.I only use IE8 for e-mail and plan on switching someday. I am a fan of Kim Komando and she is always preaching about the vulnerabilities in IE 8.You can download several different browsers at her site www.komando.com.One reason I like firefox is it shows when I misspell a word.Legal like surfing.

I don't even have IE installed
This has gone on for months and it only happens on CNews, and only on posts from a very small group when they cut and paste.It may be a bug somewhere but it's such an anomaly that most people never experience it.This is where the problem lies but when I copy and paste it everything looks normal. We'll see how it looks when I post. I think it has to do with the directional quotation marks. Normally, the quotation marks look like this "" instead of angled like they are on the post by konagold. Some of the things people post totally screw with my screen view of CNews. It changes the font style and makes it appear smaller on my screen.It seems to have something to do with people cutting and pasting things and manifested itself again with the post by konagold. His post shows some strange characters which I think has something to do with this.It happens off and on and has for months.
